kirkey coil over cover install?

Another stupid, simple question. I ordered coil over covers and just received kirkey 0042, & it's first time I've actually seen them. Not quite what I expected, one end has a smaller opening, it seems like the vinyl would rip if it were under the spring. The only reason I bought them was to protect the thrust bearings. How do install the covers, small opening: up, down, or cut it?

small opening would go up so it covers the strut shaft.

Got them on. Should have bought & installed covers when originally got the coil overs.
