Key not turning back all the way.

Hello,
Have a serious problem with my ignition on my '99 Grand Prix.
Just today I went to turn my car off after putting it into park and the key would not turn back all the way.
The skinny:
-Car starts and drives just fine.
-The key can come out no problem - it is not stuck.
-When the driver door is opened it keeps dinging with the keys out and you cannot lock the car etc when pcushing the button on the door.
-With the key out you can turn the car over by turning it with your hand as it seems to think the key's still in it.
-Battery power will not turn off completely. ('park' light on center console stays light)
What the heck's the problem? Anything I can do to fix it myself?
Thanks for your tips!
Derek

there is a thread on here somewhere.. I think. I have the same problem. there is a little tab under there near your key, you can take that tab out it is covering a small hole, if you push something up in the hole there is a button that will release your key. everybody I talked to about it just said take the bottom cover off your steering column and remove the whole thing, it is just a safety thing that is suppost to only let you take the key out in park. removing the assembly will allow you to remove your keys while still in gear(so dont forget to put it in park first) I plan on removing mine, but the wather has not been very nice around here for me to play with it.
