Hello everyone. I am thinking about buying a K&N Cold Air Intake for my 06 grand prix but im not exactly sure if it's worth it. What are the benefits of it? Any downfalls? Thanks a lot
 


You'll gain a little hp, loose a little gas mileage; and your car will sound a whole lot better. But Make your own. I would make my own if I could do it over again.
 
The name brand is nice to have but for the money making your own is the way to go. plus there are some awesome write-ups on here
 


the kits are not worth it because of how expensive they are (200-300 dollars is a joke). i made one for $70 and it works great...most importantly whatever you end up doing just be sure to get a good filter
 
eh...i made a 4in one with a 7in filter for less...glad to see chrome intakes is making 3.5in intakes rather than all 3in! they must be movin up in the world. the 4in pipeing and coupler fit the tb really well

You do gain gas mileage, considering I have a 2004 GTP with a K&N Air Intake, but you only gain gas mileage by not using alot of the extra HP. If you push your pedal down harder after you get the air intake, you lose mileage, if you drive more smoothly or the same way you drove before the Air Intake, then you get better mileage. I got my MPG #'s at home, but I'll update later to show the #'s i got. Though mine is a supercharged engine, so who knows, maybe you do lose MPG when you get an air intake for a N/A engine, but something sounds strange about that....
 
colder air = denser air = more fuel to maintain A/F ratios.

SO, cold air does cause a loss in gas mileage.

Anyone look at their winter vs summer gas mileage? (ignoring that everyone pushes their car more in the summer :D)
 
then why did my MPG increase? using both the Computer MPG Calculations and my own calculations of miles driven/gas to fill tank, over multiple runs.

MPG Stock Air Filter < MPG K&N Drop In Filter < MPG K&N Air Intake
 
K&N is still a HAI.

Only other variable is flow. Better flow, better gas mileage. Apparently headers have the same effect.
 
So it's really a battle between temperature & flow, each car being different and each air intake being different. So one can not easily say an air intake will "give you better MPG" or "give you worse MPG"
 


if youre modifying your car and worrying about mileage then you should just go ahead and end yourself.

Not everyone is modifying their cars for HP & Speed. I'm only modifying for MPG Increases, if some HP/Speed comes with it thats fine, but not the main reason for modifying my car.
