K&N Cold Air Intake, worth it?

no but the sheet that you get with the 3800 would show how much you gain on it. who said you cant go and add some more heat shielding on to the sides of the k&n box. the tube on the inside is smoother then a sheet of glass and is a thick piece i don't think heat is going to affect it any more then the heat that is in the intake manifold. there is not a cleaner way of getting the air from behind the light in to the motor then this

quick google search for the pic, our motors a lot cleaner having only 18,000 miles never in the snow and very rarely in the rain and always in a garage.

ours: YouTube - 96 impala K&N

in the video that high piched sound is there even with the hood closed, its just the amount of air it sucks through the filter. cops always look at it at lights because it sounds like the motor is about to fall out from under the car it makes so much noise under the hood.

the maf is as close as you can come to mounting the filter on it. ours we closed off the little gap you see in between the radiator and the box and when the hood is closed you hear & feel the air on the edge of the hood and around the head lights. we made the seal around the hood a lot stiffer too so its pretty much closed off from the motor.

300 at the crank and stock its 198 hp at the rear wheels to a 217 hp at the rear wheels thats kinda hard to argue with

The LT1 V8 in the 1994-1996 Impala SS had 260HP at the crank, not 300.

And, yes that plastic will heat soak bad. After a drive where it has been sitting in a hot engine bay for an hour it will be as hot as everything else. It is black, which means it has no emissivity to reflect radiant heat. Hence why the good intakes use aluminum (high emissivity) and reflective insulation.

Also, what those dynos don't tell you is that K&N will feed a cool charge of air right on the filter during the run with their intake to inflate their results.

who said you cant go and add some more heat shielding on to the sides of the k&n box.

No one did. But you already payed out the ass for a generic intake, why should you have to?

What about the piss poor fitment? It doesn't even come close to sealing with the hood of a w-body.

Let's get back to the facts here. For the money you pay for a K&N intake, there are much better intakes out there for the w-body. All you're really getting with it is the name.

Yes get your fact straight the truth is there will be very little difference in any intake available maybe 1or 2 hp,but the fact is that K&N does spend time and money on R&D and the tubing they use is not plastic but heat resitant HDPE(high density polythylene)and as far as the heat shield it is just meant to shield from direct engine heat not seal it in which workes just fine and it looks like it belongs there not in a laundry room,I run a K&N setup in my GP ,my GTO and my Titan and am satisfied with the looks and function.Chico.

yes thank you very much they make a intake that works looks good and does its job. i want one for my blazer just for the sound it gave to our impala. the stock intake blew(not really sucked) and had no sound to it the k&n sounds like a fu#king monster is under the hood when you get on the gas the the rpm go over 3k. it sounds like every svt rustang that has that nice sound from the factory.

but i think there is more of a difference between intakes then 1 or 2 hp. you dont just hack saw glue and put a little dryer vent (aluminum is used for a heat sink for a reason) on and make a 20 hp gain.

theres a reason why people make knock off k&n filters and not there own style.

I have a K&N hot air intake, and i still hear a noticable difference. And i have had my car to the dyno and i gained approx 5-6 hp from a $45 intake. So i am pleased with what i have for now.

It seems very strange to me that many people are willing to drop so much money on an intake when the only positive thing they can say is "it makes my car sound like a monster." Who care what your intake SOUNDS like? Don't you care what your intake is actually doing for your car? K&N=fail :th_crossbones1:

youd care what your car sounded like if you had a blower..but i wouldnt spend more than $50 on an intake..

My car is a gtp, yes it has a blower. I know that. I could care less if the people around me on the street can hear it. If I want them to know I have a supercharger all I have to do is step on the pedal :th_mischievious:

thats how this intake sounds tho, when your just driving round its nice and quiet like it was stock (other then the sucking sound) and when you go past like half throttle it wakes up and has a whole different sound to it.

the seat of the pants test its passes too b/c stock engine 1-2 gear change no tire chirp. after we got a hyper tech programmer(when ram chargers went out for 150$) the 1-2 change would chirp every now and then. after putting the k&n and same settings in the programmer it chirps the tires in to 2nt gear every time you hold it. keep in mind 2 12inch wide tires on a 4 door don't chirp easy, but the fact that i can go out and at 50-55 mph the rear tires will chirp and a few times break lose and leave 2 10 foot long strips at 55 mph there is a nice boost in performance with the k&n fipk.
