• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Just picked up my GP GT

Hey, I just bought a CLEAN 99 Grand Prix GT with 95,000 miles. I have been reading a lot about tranny problems and I noticed after 50 highway miles my car had 2 slight rough shifts that went away quickly. I was just wondering if I should be worried ( I baby this car from takeoffs and don't drive it very hard )? I'm sure not every GP has tranny problems. Otherwise everything seems to work great.

Could be low on fluid or a bad shift solenoid. Either or, fixable/tolerable haha.

As for it running cooler, that's normal/average operating temp.

lol definetly new to GP's, all of em this gen have tranny issues, continue to baby it

Okay I guess I'll just continue and treat it nice and hopefully it returns the favor. Maybe I'll call my local tranny shop and see if they know anything about GP's and if they have a preventive fix. I really need this car to last me a few more years since I'm in college. Lol the main reason I bought this car was because I was sick of my manual Cavalier, looks like that is coming back to bite me in the ass.

naa, these trans are a dime a dozen, especially for the GT's, so even if ya pop it you can get em from the bone yard for under 400 normally and swap one in a good saturdays time, there not really to bad to do even if your a novice wrencher, and with the writeups and expertise on this site we could guide ya through it pretty quick. As for preventive maintance take it to a decent shop (not "Joes Auto Repair and Fried Chicken") and have a trans flush and filter done with a flush machine, not a drain/filter/fill, but a true flush and use a quality trans fluid like Mobil 1 or equal, if anything it should drastically help for the time being

Edit- its about a 80/20 split on for and againest trans flushes, but if you flush one thats slipping like no other, it will go out. If its just showing wear signs it will help! I work in a pretty good name shop and do 10-12 trans flushes a week, and NEVER have flushed a trans and had it come back with issues, unless it was already slipping bad or showing severe signs of fail, in your case do it!

Ok sounds good. The previous owner who I know (VERY meticulous with his vehicles) said that he changed the transmission fluid this summer so I'll hold off on getting it flushed. It only happened once in the 200 miles since I bought it so I guess I'll just keep an eye on it. I love everything else about the car though, and it looks brand new, not even a scratch on it so I'm pretty happy with it.

Well that didn't take to long, I was driving on the highway and when I got off it shifted rather hard, jerking into gear. It went away but I would like to get the problem fixed ASAP. Where do I start? I really don't feel like dropping $1500 on a new tranny for a car I bought 4 days ago.

If it makes you feel any better.I have a 97 GT w/ 210K miles on the tranny(original tranny). It shifts very smooth and the ONLY issue that I have is when I park in the garage(or any up/down hill) its hard to take outta park(and thats cause all the weight of the car is on the tranny). So to prevent that, I park w/ the e-brake on.

No actually that doesn't make me feel any better.

any chance the car was bought from an owner that maybe had the vehicle modded at one point? you say the op temp is 180. thinking maybe there is a 180 tstat in there. wondering if maybe that owner had a powertuner or hpt and programmed the shifts too stiff at low accel? just throwing it out there. its a possibility

No, it was his wifes car for driving the kids around so there was no modding, but I was questioning why it hovers around 175-180 for normal highway driving.

get the pcm scanned for codes... bet u have a bad pressure control solenoid.

Took it in and your right, scanned the 1811 code. Said for $300 they can replace the solenoid but its only a band aid and there are no guarantees. Or for $1500 he can put in a new tranny. What do you guys think?

Well every place I called suggested against just putting in a new solenoid. Most said the repairs would be between $1000 and $3000. Looks like my one week old car might be forsale pretty quick...
