Issue: 07' Grand Prix Base Will Start But Will Not Change Gears

Good Evening, all I'm trying to troubleshoot the situation with my 07' Pontiac Grand Prix Base. I come to seek advice, if this ins't the proper board to post this on, I'm sorry in advanced.

To Elaborate:
Earlier today, I left my house like normal, the car started fine and I was on the go. I reached my destination and when I went to leave the car started as normal, I put it into Drive hit the gas and nothing happened. So, I put it into Reverse and got the same results. One, thing I have noticed though is that I now have the ability to move my gear shifter freely without pressing down handle up at least 2 marks. For example, If I am in Drive, I am able to go to Reverse. Also, to note I haven't heard any strange noises running through the car either.

Questions I have:
Does anyone know what it could be?
Have you ever had this issue? How did you fix it?
What should I be checking for?
What would you do in this situation?
Or am I S.O.L? Will I need a new tranny?

Things I've done so far:
>Looked under the car for any leakage (No transmission fluid was leaking)
>Checked Transmission fluid and it was a dark color and not pinkish red
>Took off the center console to verify everything was hooked up properly

Thank you for taking the time to read through this post.

will it move it you put it in 1 st gear manually? will it go in neutral?

if your lucky the plastic clip broke off the tranny at the cable end, worst case the forward band broke. dark fluid is never a good sign.

See if the linkage off the transmission broke, the plastic ball piece can crack and break and cause the shifter to not move on the transmission anymore.

Should look like this on top of the transmission, inbetween the exhaust and master cylinder.

Thank you guys for the replies, it's some really helpful information. I was able to get the issue fixed. I want to give BIG thank you to Fivefingerdeathpunch! That's exactly what the issue was. The grommet had broken off and the piece was unhooked. I went and got a grommet and hooked the piece back on.
