Is There An EGR Valve Workaround For a '97?

Hey I have a 97 GP GT with like 162k miles on it. I don't wanna drop the money into it to fix it all up getting it all 'purdy' looking, but mine idles rough and my service engine soon light comes on. The error code was related to the EGR valve. These things are like $150 (the cheapest I've seen.) Is there anyway to get around needing one? Or is there anywhere I can get one for under $50? (Besides a junkyard)

Thanks

make sure the valve is bad, it could be a clogged passage, or just be dirty (both more common than a bad valave)

take it off and soak it a good cleaner...worked for me.let it sit for at least a day in som JB and work the valve back and forth often while soaking

have someone with a tuner disable the valve operation and then have the DTC for it disabled so it wont show any longer.:th_winking:

Now if it's stuck open you will need to insert a blockoff plate as well.

Now Now Lee that wouldnt comply with emissions testing..... LOL

If the valve is mechanically stuck open and letting exhaust gas into the intake when it shouldnt be there it will definately cause the engine to run rough. What normally happens is a small chunk of carbon (or PISTON :th_lipssealed2:) will get lodged between the valve and the body itself which causes the egr to be stuck open and allow egr flow when there shouldnt be any. This is easy to check by taking off the egr valve, just two 13mm head nuts, and take a small screwdriver and push on the plunger in the middle. It is spring loaded and should be in the seated position after pushing on it.

I took it off and there is just a hole in the bottom- no plunger or anything. Doesn't look like there is anything but built up carbon inside of it.
