Is the ignition key the same as the door key in a 2004 grand prix?

I have a 2004 grand prix and the key has never been able to unlock the door. I bought this car in 2009 so I am not the original owner. The ignitian key works for the glove box, trunk and to start the car but not for the door. My remote for unlocking the doors is not working at times and I have to climb through the trunk to get in the car at times. It is a real pain. Is there a seperate key or is there something wrong with my lock. I read somewhere that it dries up over time from not using it and to spray wd-40 inside to lubricate is this right?

bjornbjorn,

The key can be used for the ignition, as well as the driver’s door lock and storage compartments.

You may want to try WD-40. If that doesn't work, consider have a certified tech take a look at it.

Keep us posted.

Possible that the door might haved been changed all together but likely just seized up. Check the sticker inside the door by the latch and see if the vin numbers match up and let us know.

you could if all else fails, just go buy 2 new door locks and put them in your doors, you now have a new door key, but you are also not crawling through the trunk.

remove door skin, and they are held in with a clip. thats it.

and your key fob, have you changed the battery? or made sure the contacts under the buttons are clean? i just cleaned mine and im back to a 100 foot range.

I'm guessing your door lock seized up like my trunk lock was. I had an 04 and the trunk lock never turned. It turned out to be a little corrosion. I removed the lock cylinder and tapped it with a small hammer to break the corrosion free and shot some white lithium grease in there to keep it from happening again. Haven't had a problem since. I check them from time to time not using the key fob as well so as to make sure they aren't freezing up.

Same story for me, except that I cannot climb through the trunk... That too is seized.

I am going to take a look and see if i can get some penetrating spray in there and also take the lock cyclinder out and bang it around to remove corrosion etc.
