Is the HD swap worth the effort and money for a non-HD trans.

Hey guys my axle is starting to go out and I was just wondering if I should consider finding a HD diff at a junkyard and getting a gtp cv shaft or if there really isn't much difference and I should just get a regular gt cv shaft?

from what I've been told, there's not much difference. The only one really worth it is the comp-g since it's 3.29. You never know. I picked up one for $30 at the junk yard last week!

Ya that's why I'm curious I've never seen a picture or anything of the differential differences so I dont know if its a big difference or not but, I have to replace the passenger shaft so if there was ever a time to upgrade it would be now.

It's funny you mention this, I was curious when I pulled the comp-g so I compared it to a stock differential. Here ya go:

The difference isn't worthwhile to swap for the heck of it. My reasoning on this is that the failure of the diffs is that the roll pin holding the main pin in the diff is what breaks. It can break on any diff out there. Heck it happens in other GM cars that have the same type of setup in the diff.
 


Ya Idk I asked brandon hall and he said just to stick with stock and he's like the 4t65e guru. So I should probably just take his advice and not mess with it.

The roll pin is the same roll pin. Like I said.

FWiW, Brandon bought some of his trans tools from me. I realize I'm not posting like I used to... but there's this odd thing that some members will still do where they tell someone to go do what Bill said... because Bill said it and it's probably 99% right. :th_scratchhead:

I know your a 3800 master Bill! I've gotten a lot of help from your posts, and I'm still in desperate need of switching to braided fuel lines. Luckily I have your thread so I know what to do ☺

Lol how did you know!! Its just a real b*tch cause I had to use fuel hose and it doesnt always leak but its like every week I have to swap in new hose and clamps. Originally I had it clamped with standard hose clamps, then I double clamped it, and then I used fuel injection hose clamps but no matter what I do it always eventually starts leaking again.

That's not a bad idea but these are zzp modded rails so I don't want to make them all haggard. I just need to get the parts for the braided lines ordered. I was hoping I could just find someone that had them for sale but that hasnt worked out.

Rubber fuel injection hose is not going to hold very well. Its cheap to repair it properly with the nylon fuel line and there are plenty of fittings available. I have repaired many fuel leaks with Nylon and never had an issue with leaking. Steel to nylon compression fittings are easy to use.


- I don't think the HD swap is worth it unless you are beefing up the rest of the transmission. When I had TEP build my transmission for the 07 GT I had them put in the 3.29 gears because I liked the comp g acceleration better than the 04 GT I had.
 


They're basically the same transmission minus gearing and that "HD" diff that isn't any stronger than a non-HD one.

Avoid one wheel wonders and driving like a doosher and you'll be fine.

If you're using hose clamps on fuel line, you're doing it wrong. The actual quick connect fittings are cheap.
