Is it possible to run without an O2 sensor?

I saw in a post where a guy was not using the O2 sensor and running in open loop all the time. How would you go about doing this and is it safe?
 


You could do this but why would you want to? The point of the 02 sensor being used is to constantly keep you at Stoich, 14.7 air/fuel ratio. The pcm constantly uses 02 info in all but PE mode/heavy and WOT conditions to keep optimal fuel economy. There are some guys that will tune pcms like this with on car tuning and assure everything is right, but if ANYTHING at all is out of whack such as a vacuum leak, bad injectors or near any sensor on the engine then the pcm will have absolutely no idea the car isnt running the correct air/fuel ratio and can cause engine damage in a big hurry! Some guys do it to eliminate the MAF sensor and run in speed density mode only but isnt easily done with these cars from what I have seen.
 
IIRC someone actually explained why it's a bad idea to try a speed density on these cars...I specifically remember that we don't have enough fuel tables to accommodate a speed density tune.

Now that you mention it, I remember seeing something to that effect as well.
 


As part of the startup time for closed loop, you can also adjust how many seconds before it goes into closed loop when the engine is warm. Stock I think is 90 seconds? I've got mine set to 20 seconds.

well, I think that artical may have been wrong (i know the one you are refering to also-I remember reading it myself) I can promise you that it will not stay in closed loop OR wash down the cylinders

These are some other files i have on the gtp closed loop on a stock 2000 GTP is about 50*f, and a stock 98 GTP is about 76.1*f. I have a 160 and have had no problems with fuel trims, O2 sensors, or washed out cylinders.

That being said, you will get a little more carbon buildup with a cooler thermostat. But that is the only bad things that can come from a 160 besides worse gas miliage.

sounds right...and good idea for lowering that
