intermittent power steering

I was driving around a corner and all of a sudden no assist, managed to strong arm it, then on my last turn heard a pop sound and steering went back to normal.

checked fluid - full , checked lines and rack - no leaks, pump has no whine unless fully turned left or right.

would this be the rack or pump?

I'm thinking rack.

Sounds like the rack to me. Strange that its not leaking fluid though. Either that or the intermediate steering shaft is binding up.

this bolt on the bottom side of the rack by the trans pan

oh ok, yea most of them can be changed but some of them have to be pressed on, not sure if that one has to be, i would think not,
does it do it on every ture or just when you turn left or right?

ok i was bout to say that, that wouldnt be the problem because that bearing would cause problems why turning in any dirction, but yea i would just pop a new bearing in there and be done with it(hoping that would fix it and that its not something interal in the rack)

haha yeah easy first, crap part is i think the bearing i need is out of stock everywhere i may need to steal a bearing from a used rack and see how that goes. I'm hoping i can get the outside of bearing out without taking the rack entirely out.

you should be able to get to it,
you could just drop the cradle some to give you some more room(its like 4 bolts)

The rack in my 00 GT started leaking there as well. In fact, it leaks ALL my fluid out from what I can tell. I have absolutely no power steering at all now and its all I can do to turn it either direction using all my strength. I just ordered a new rack as I'm sure with the 232K on the rack that its just shot.

I wouldn't recommend dropping all 4 bolts out of the cradle unless you have a good way to support the entire assembly. I'd just loosen the 2 rear bolts and let it drop a bit. I would think that would give enough room to get that out.

im just trying to move this boot to disconnect the rack from the steering shaft, i bent a screw driver already trying to pry it up.

thats what i ment i couldnt remenber if it was 2 or 4
i think there a clip holding it on there

i had both rear bolts out was not budging, im thinking maybe i need to loosen the front bolts up just a bit. its raining now so ill have to try later. and i dont think there is a clip, it wiggles around the top of the rack its just on such an awkward angle, i thought someone might have a trick to moving it up.

yea just break the front two lose and it should drop some if not just losen them up some more but make sure you support it before you losen them, and if its not the clip style then it should juts pop out, like the halfshafts, in case you didnt know, there pushed in and then there popped in alittle more, theres 2 different restest lips it latchs to, so pull realy realy hard and get a big pry bar and go to town

that plastic cowl that covers the steering linkage sucks. i managed to get it off but i have no idea how im going to get it back on after putting the new rack in the angle is terrible.

yea there all a pain to get back in..i had to lossen the the motor mounts and the trans so i could rock the whole thing back and worth just for a inch or two
just take your time and pay attention to what your doing and it wont be such a pain

well thanks for all the help thus far much appreciated. I managed to get everything out. got my new rack and bushings and tie rods. put everything back in.
But the ISS is a pain in the ass i was wiggling that thing for like 2 hours and it would not get on the bolt. so i gave up for the night. hopefully tomorrow i can get it to connect.
