Interesting 4T65-E fact ?!

Pontiacs have competed in organized drag racing since the sport's infancy, but the arrival of the Sport Compact classes presented a new challenge. The racing Sunfire is powered by a race-prepared version of the Ecotec 2.2-liter, four-cylinder engine that sends its power to the pavement through the front tires. The Ecotec is an advanced engine that is available in production Sunfires and a variety of GM vehicles worldwide. In showroom trim, the Ecotec engine produces 140 horsepower; the racing version tops 1,000 horsepower. A Hydra-Matic 4T65-E four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission handles the Ecotec's considerable torque.

For one I didn't know the ecotec Drag cars had our trannies in them !

Good find, but with $5000+ in parts alone any trans could hold 1000hp...... gives me some hope that my stock can hold the 240hp:th_king-normal::th_thumb-up:

I even have GM's notes on how to build a 4T65E for that application.

I would love to see these notes. all of the ones GM officialy released do not have complete instructions. As far as ive heard its real hush hush stuff. Wonder why we only use a few GM racing parts in everyones trannys. I dont think the vendors have a clue about what is exactly in the GM race trannys. They just use what seems to work, which seems to be doing ok

also the race trannys do break...they just hold a smidge better then most:D
Would love to see what a GMR tranny would do on a street car that has 20's on daily, goes to the track with 15" rims and slicks, and runs full weight. The TC would have to be swapped for sure to be able to do this but you get the drift.
What would happen if one of the vendors drag cars started running one?
Would the gearing on the GMR be a better choice for 1/4 mile? Would it be faster?

I have the writeup on this also, its been around for a few years and I also have or had a write from the early 2000s which was a different build yet. The GM Race trans is a 3 speed, they dissable 4th as there is no use for it in a race car. It also has a 4.00+ final drive, a trans brake, extensively modified case and pan for oil pickup, coan non lockup high stall converter, the coarse pitch 1" race chain, and a slew of other parts. The interesting thing is that they use for the most part all OE internal parts such as the geartrain! They use OE clutches except for 3rd which is a Raybestos Z-pack. It is a very light car that this is in so that helps a ton on parts breakage. Im not sure how many runs they get out of the trans now, but they used to tear them down every run

....Im not sure how many runs they get out of the trans now, but they used to tear them down every run
and there's the kicker.lol. But i guess no transmission handling 1000 HP is really "streetable" to begin with. it's meant for racing and performance, not efficiency and reliability. But still, the possibilities.... Definitely an encouraging piece of info to have!
