Intercooler Spray Bar Kit...

I just got my Summit Racing Magazine the other day and I was looking through it. I seen two interesting kits in there that sort of interested me.

The first kit is a NOS Brand IC Spray Bar kit ment for an 03/04 Cobra which lists for $375.95 (PN: NOS-16034NOS). The second kit I seen was a CryO2 Kit which lists for $369.95 (PN: DEI-080108).

I posted about IC sprayers on ClubGP awhile ago. I was told these wouldn't help a car with an A/W IC, but now I see kits for an 03/04 Cobra which has an A/W IC? I don't see why an A/A IC would gain more anyway, I think an A/W would gain a hell of a lot considering you can cool the water down without an ice box. I donno, I'm really curious what kinda results the Cobra guys are seeing with these kits. Anyone part of any Cobra forums and know anything about this? Anyone know of any good Cobra forums I can research myself?

I like the idea of these IC sprayers. Its way safer than injecting NOS though this application (don't have to worry about potential rotor stripping or Core damage). I'm still not 100% sold on injecting inside the motor.

Any opinions or thoughts on this are welcome...
 


I know my buddy JT who is pulling the front wheels off the ground and almost dragging bumper, is running one on his 04. That doesn't mean it is good, but he knows what he is doing so I am sure he knows whats up on his own car. svtperformance.com is a good starting point when I had my lightning, before I sold it I went ther for info.
 
These are my thoughts- I have several friends that spray nitrous inside the engine. up to 150wet...with no problems(tuned). All you have to do is pull 4* of timing if you run that big of a shot..and some fine tweaking....but up to a 100wet can be handled daily on our engines..(L67)...just change the plugs to a degree colder. If the blower has more than 60K on it..chances are the coating is already coming off.....

I take it you have the blower still(pic in your sig). At which point you have the heat exchangers mounted on the front of the car. If you mount a sprayer kit to this..it is possible to cool it. How much...I dont know. For the A/A IC's for turbo applications....it is 50/50. if you have a big turbo you are liable to suck excess N2O/CO2 into the intake through the turbo and throw off your air fuel and..this could cause a problem(from what I have been informed through the other turbo guys), BUT. there are several Honda guys with these and say they dont have any probems...and it helps out a little bit.

with the A/W IC..there are water additives that you can be add that will help bring temps down.....

What times are you running with the car right now?

The sprayers are hit or miss. personally, I dont know of anyone in my area with an 03 Cobra that has these, or even wants them.....some here run sub 10sec passes

my final thoughts: If you are a full drag car that is trying to squeeze ever last bit of power out of it..this may help drop a few tenths. but on a daily driven mildly built car. it may be a waste of money. again these are my thoughts...

see what the 03/04 cobra guys use, as well as the lightnings. if that doesnt help..look into the turbo hondas/supras. etc. GOOD LUCK!!!!! I saw those kits in the catalog as well.

I saw one of Thrashers old cars probably like 5 years ago or so at a local track and they had a huge container in the trunk full of ice for feeding the intercooler. The spray bar idea may help out on the starting line but the heated coolant isnt going to take long to get hot again while constantly circulating over a hot engine and in front of a hot radiator. With near ice water flowing through the whole run I would think it would do a better job, but that ice is prolly going to melt down pretty quick which leaves you with a lot of water unless you use dry ice. The spray bar has its place and I think we would see more of that in the w-body crowd if people knew it helped out.

You would gain more using regular ice vs. dry ice for this set up.

On the turbo car I plan to build the engine coolant will be ice-water fed and the turbo will be fed into air cool box where it will be a A/W IC before going into the intake. As long as you have a good quality pump that can move a lot of GPM then the ice water mix will stay ice for quite a few runs. You will how ever have to drain water out in between each run and add what ever ice melts.

one idea you could do is an ice box in the back...which cools the fuel. many racers around here us it. you cool the ambiant temperature of the fuel making for a nice little bump in HP. My GTP may end up getting on of these when the fuel tank is made.
 
I donno how those spray bars work, but I figured the one form NOS would spray the FMHE for the whole run (WOT switch activated), am I wrong? I would think there would be a good benefit from that alone. I heard the CryO2 kit you have to spray before the run, and make a pass.

As for an Ice box, I will never do anything like that. To me, its more trouble than its worth honestly. Having to ice down every run, having a big cell in the trunk, not something I would do. Thats why the spray bar deal is appealing to me and its more streetable. Have a remote bottle opener, press a few buttons and your ready to go, very simple.

As for spraying inside the motor. I donno if I want to do that or not. Not only am I afriad of rotor damage, i'm more worried about IC core damage from termial shock. If I wasn't ICed, I'd probably do a 100 shot wet, but I don't think it would be a good idea for my setup.

Any one else got anything to add...
 
I sprayed N20 through the blower for 3+ years no damage.

A local sprayed alcohol injection though his A LOT for about 2 years. No damage what so ever top either of our rots. Rotor coating flaking off due to spraying anything though the blower is another tall tale people still believe.

You only want to spray after the blower so it can mix in the LIM and have a better chance at getting into each intake runner of the LIM/Heads at the same time/even flow. Spraying through the blower will not hurt anything as long as the shot does not go above a 75 IMO.

i would love for someone to make a spacer with tapped holes for alcohol. it would be pretty damn effective in my eyes. although, you may have to tap the drivers side runners on their own because the lim inlet only really shows four of them.
 
I'm not so much worried about the rotors as I am my IC core. I wish there was some solid evidence around showing that nitrous can be shot through an IC core w/o damaging it over time. I don't feel like cracking the core and hydrolocking the motor.

I still don't see why a spray bar wouldn't work, especially w/ an A/W IC. People who claim gains w/ fans on there FMHE must be blowing smoke because nitrogen on the radiator would cool way more than any fan would.
