Installing OEM NAV into Base Grand Prix

I have been scouring the interwebz and earth to figure out how to get a OEM GM NAV into my Base, Non-Monsoon 06' Grand Prix.... It was pretty simple

1. Purchase the OEM GM NAV Antenna can be found on ebay for $20 GMC GM NAVIGATION ANTENNA GPS ANT MAGNETIC | eBay .... YOU will need this regardless if you want the GPS to work as it also needs it to display the time in your HUD.. pretty much plug and play... just connect it to the back of the nav then stick it under dash.

2. Purchase VSS harness .... This will allow voice commands AND will give the GPS your location and speed etc... Pretty much need it if you want the Navi to work right.. now if you just want the fancy radio and aren't bothered to use the nav function you don't need it. I do not know how to connect this one as I did not care for the Nav function. $54 http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-2007-20...353?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a1a759e91

3. This step is only needed if you DO NOT have the monsoon sound system.. You WILL need a external AMP to power the unit... the stock one disc player has a built in amp the navigation does not you will need a amp to power it ... You WILL be able to hear the radio but it will be very low until you get a amp.. Now I do not know much about amps etc but I do know I talked to a few people and you can get a small 75watt amp and mount it under the dash and have it wired to the navigation and the speakers for around $150 ( thats what I was quoted) but if your good with car audio i'm sure you can rig it up yourself. If you DO have the monsoon system you should have a AMP connector that is plug and play to the back of the unit. I have found this here .... http://gm-navigation.com/non-bose-amp-system.html it looks like it would work but don't quote me on it just something for you to look into.

4. Finally you will need to get the unit programmed to your VIN as the unit with show LeftLock Activated... Take it to a GM Dealer and tell them you need a "VIN RELEARN" on your OEM Nav... this cost be $85 and about an hour at the dealer.

That is all folks I went through alot to figure all this out so I'm making it easy for you all with a Base GP ... My GP did have OnStar though... Now YOU can just remove your old nav and plug in the new one get the VIN Relearned and install the amp and your set to go if you dont want to use the Nav as we all have GPS on our cellphones anyway. This is the route I went.

PICS!!! You can change the color of the screen from Blue,Green,To a Purplish Color (looks red in the night)

And question... why would you just not buy a NAV headunit?? Mine has DVD, USB and NAV (of sorts) and was $650-700 and doesnt need an amp to power it. So why go through all that for a "factory" stereo?? It looks good, just trying to figure out the thought behind it.

I'm not sure if its XM ready but I'm positive it can be used with XM ..somehow.. mybe ? lol but i think there is a module you can use.... and develand you do have a point my reasoning was I wanted to keep that "Stock" look kinda like why you wouldn't put a aftermarket deck in a classic 69' camaro kind just kills the vibe and as usual the classic stock parts are more expensive than the aftermarket parts, but the one you have is very nice and fits well... I actually installed this one then decided I wanted to go for a aftermarket unit after all of my hard work lol was actually looking into getting the Pioneer AVH-P3300BT as I really don't care for the navigation function... saying that and to how I can't post into classified yet ... i'm trying to figure out what i'm going to do with this one :th_sinister:... sooo if you have ideas just pm me !

My car has XM so I was just wondering if I could transfer it over to this one somehow. LOL. After all my crazy hard work tonight trying to get my backlight to work again, now it works less well. I'm pretty sure I didn't use big enough resistors. SIGH try again next week when I get back to RadioShack.

Shoot me a price what you want on that unit if you're interested in selling.

Yea I posted on your backlight issue the bulbs u get from RadioShack don't need resistors and look good .. Also pm'd

No no... that was the HVAC. It's doing fine. The Radio is what I flummoxed. I used LEDs with built in resistors which were, apparently, not large enough. Had I known how to use the LED calculator previously, it would be okay like the HVAC. HAHA.

Received your PM. Thank you.

Back from the dead! Any reason the VSS harness in the first post won't work on an 05?
