okay so the other day i was in my car, (94 grndprix 3.4) i went to turn on the radio....well i kind of like started to start my car, but then turned it off. i didnt realy think anything of it. so i went to start it like 4 hours later when i did it revved to a little over 3000 rpms then dropped and died. it continued to keep doing this. somehow i could feather the gas just to keep it running, and was able to crawl home. when i drove down the street it seemed to run great! but if you stop and let it idle it has a really low idle and it shakes pretty good. its also smoky, also it somehow has made me loose power to my brakes. could i have realy screwed up my car that bad, or was something just ready to go? any help would be appreciated.

i started my car but turned off the ignition when it was starting because i just wanted to listen to the radio. i just wanted a pepsi! i know i should of just let it start, but for some reason my instincts said to turn it off. im not sure if it thru any codes, it says check engine i think. it sounds like the exhaust pipe is gone but it isnt. frickin car.

Ummm...check engine IS A CODE! That must mean you probably have a exhaust leak before the o2 sensor and it is throwing off your trims or something along those lines. Take it to a damned auto store and have them read the codes in it for free.

i will try that. ive had it parked and ive been driving a vw bus since it happened....slightly different handling. sucks i just had to get my power rack and pinion assembly thing changed out...cost like 500 bucks. before my car quit running the idle would fluctuate a little, it did this for atleast a year. i might have to get it towed to a shop because i dont know if it will make it down the road or not. grand prixs still kick ass.

Now that I think about it...it could be a EGR issue (easy fix) or a TPS or IAC sensor (both in the throttle body...easy fixes, but pricey)

its realy funny you wrote that reply...because i just found out what was wrong with my car today! Catalytic Converter - $300 parts and labor i didnt think that was too bad...until he told me it need a power steering line as well. thats only like 50 bucks...but laber is like 238! sucks. and he said i need some brake booster line or something. hope im not getting hosed.

Sounds like you are...and $300 for a converter??!? Should have bought a Magnaflow High Flow one on EBay for about $80-$100 and had a exhaust shop weld it in for $20 bucks. Plus it would sound better, get better mpg's and go a bit quicker ;)

great.......got it back cost me $520! for a cat and a powersteering line, and a break booster line. my power steering is groaning at idle now, and its leaking powersteering fluid now! but i cant tell where from!? its dripping from the frame by the drivers side....ughhhhhh!

Take it back to them and cuss them out and tell them to fix it. And if they charge you threaten a lawsuit. That **** should be free if they can't fix a power steering pump/line.

i took it back and they said its not leaking power steering fluid, its my engine oil drain plug. i guess there right but my powersteering sounds funny to me...but i guess it works. they also said my mass air flow sensor should be replaced. think im gonna do that myself

WTF...where are you going? Take this thing to a dealership or have someone that knows about cars work on it. Sounds like your gettin' taken for a ride there.

Guess i got here a little late, the first thing I thought of was vacuum leak, makes it rev high in park and run like **** other wise. If it was the main one off the intake to the booster that explains the no power brakes.

hi i just got mine fixed it did the same thing reved high and no power brakes. my mechanic replaced the vacum line from the brake booster (14.00) total bill 33.00 with labor. sorry you got hosed

My 97 grand prix did something very similar when I was 17, I didn't know ANYTHING about cars... so I took it to a local garage thinking it'd be cheaper than a dealer.. they told me mass air flow sensor.... had my car for 9 days trying to find the problem. and then finally charged me $921 for the service and parts.... FML.
This is why I now read forums and post my problems here before a garage even knows I exist.
