I don't think you'll have much luck finding info on this site ... we mostly have newer Grand prix, however check Jegs or Summit

This site is pretty much 97+ GPs. I'd look for a Chevelle forum or something similar, I forget what other cars the old GPs share the platform with.

Monte, Cutlass, Regal.

You might try a Camaro or Firebird rearend, too. Mine for my '81 (RWD) is out of an '82 Z28. I just swapped out the gears because the axle housings were different.

They're out there, but just going to be hard to find. Try new. You may be surprised at the pricing with a common ratio like you're looking for. Might not be worth the hassle of hunting for salvage yard parts.

I don't know much about these older cars but from what I've done replacing a whole rear axle with the correct gearing and such can be easier and cheaper than actually changing the gear. Did this on my ranger when I swapped out the 7.5" for 8.8" with 4.10's and LS from an explorer. Just had to weld on new leaf spring plates and shock mounts. Getting the angles right was easy as hell.

That's a good point, but finding an axle of that vintage might be a challenge. I was just suggesting new because for what he may have invested in finding the axle, shipping or travelling to pick it up and such, he may be further ahead to just buy the new gears from Summit or the like. As long as the gears and shims are set up right, he'll be fine. It's not hard to do - just time consuming. He may even find a local shop that will do it for a reasonable amount if he's unfamiliar with the process. It's probably been 20 years since I set up a rearend, but I'm fairly certain I could muttle my way through it again.
