HUD only displays speed and blinkers

I have had a couple GP's and have been a club member in the past. My g/f recently got an 01 GP GT with HUD. I know that things like check engine and the radio are supposed to display on the HUD system but it is not on hers. The head unit is a factory tape deck and I am just wondering if this is something other have seen and if so what is stopping the information from reaching the HUD?
