HUD fading in and out and EXT temp

When I bought the car a couple months ago I noticed the HUD would fade in and out. but after a week of driving it, she hasnt done that since.
Well she began to fade in and out again. Almost like when I hit bumps in the road but not exactly.
Any idea what to check on this?

Also on the heater control unit it says EXT and a temp. I'm guessing thats exterior temp. My question is everytime I start the car it begins at 126* and then moves down to about 10-15* warmer than the actual outside temp. Could this be a bad sensor?

I used a photo sensor with longer legs from the junkyard for the climate control, removed from it's housing so that I could solder both sides, top and bottom as well as place the sensor up by the hole for the light. (in my other car, a 88 fiero I installed the hud without the mirrors and for the light sensor I used the climate conroll sensor as well)

Update: Found some time to pull the HUD out and investigate. Noticed that the serial cable connector was starting to pull out. Made sure it was fully connected and put the HUD back together. So far been about 100 miles and he HUD hasnt faded out on me yet. I think I am all set in that department.

Now for the EXT temp. Anyone have any ideas on that?
