How to properly clear codes and reset CEL on 2008 Grand Prix base

Looking for some clarification. A while ago, I got a P0443 code and replaced the purge valve/solenoid. I tried to erase the code with my reader and all I hear from up front is a click of some sort and the code/CEL remains. I don't get it because my reader clears codes just fine on my other 3 vehicles (foreign and domestic - including an '05 Grand Am SE). After 3+ trips later, the CEL did not clear itself. So, I tried disconnecting the battery for a while (ground side) and the CEL came back after reconnecting with the exact same original code (P0443 - one fault and one pending). I'm pretty sure these are the original two reports and I'm just not getting them cleared out properly for some reason.

I've read various things online about disconnecting the positive battery cable, turning the key for a minute plus, reconnecting, etc., etc.. But, some of the proposed methods make me nervous. I don't want to damage anything. Can anyone share the 100% correct/safe method to clear the codes and reset the CEL on this car? It should not be this difficult, but I must be missing something. Thanks for any assistance...
 


Does seem strange that it can't clear the code, I wouldn't think it would have anything to do with the year only CAN BUS system they used on 2008 and that causing it to not clear.

I have a matco code reader myself that can do anything so I guess I've never ran across a problem like this.

But if the code comes back straight away it's likely that you still have the fault even after replacing the part. Check the fuses and possible wiring because that code is for a circuit fault.
 
un hook the neg cable from the battery for 30 minute to a hr, those codes will clear unless they are an immediate fail condition.
 
Thanks. I think I might upgrade my reader with a new model and try again. It's a hassle unhooking the battery over and over again. Plus, every time I do it, I have to reprogram the tire pressure sensors in all the tires...
 
The TPMS sensors will relearn themselves after a little bit. I had to unhook my negative terminal to clear codes because my cheap code reader decided to be a POS and keep giving me a linking fail. Not far down the road the sensors were back to where they were supposed to be.

BTW, it only takes about 10 seconds (or even less) to clear the codes once the negative terminal is off.
