How to find out engine codes?

My service engine light has been for about a week now, I want to check to see what codes it is throwing, what is a reasonable priced code checker that works well?

The engine seems fine, no power problems, it just seems a little off.

There is an Auto Zone like 1 minute from my house, would they checked codes and if they do are they pushy then about trying to fix your car?

They will check it for free. So will most any parts place. And no, never had one be pushy about it. Some will let you scan it yourself if you hand then your license as a hold.
 
autozones (at least around here) dont fix cars themselves. all they offer is the parts. and its free to scan.
