How to close coolant ports to TB

Just did this myself , pretty simple if you have the right tools.
This is to be done at your own risk!

1. To plug the two coolant ports i used quik steel from orileys

2. When filling the holes try to put some sort of pressure on the oppisite side, so it is flat and come lose. (if you would lik this is a great time to fill in the EGR with this stuff then put the bolt and holder in place)

3. Let dry for about 3 hours, then LIGHTLY sand the highs spots down smooth with the top of the LIM, I used 80 grit

4. Take of the coolant cover on the drivers side of the LIM

5. You will now want to take a dremel with the bit 199

6. You will now want to take ur time, and take the center divider out, to the middle.

7. Rinse out the LIM to get rid of any small particles. Get the gasket from you local dealer, part number is 24505049

8. Replace cover and you are done!

dumb question but im gonna ask anyway, whats the gains in doing this? i have an idea but but can use youe expertise.
 


The pluging of the coolant ports reduce the air intake temp, the coolant that flows through the throttle body is useless. The opening of the side port is to make up for closing those ports, as that is how some of the coolant gets to the rear heads
 
lol i stuttered in my post, but i had that impression and was 99% but you took it 100% and thats a good idea to do this, i have my blower off and mind as well do this today while i have nothing to do
 
The Dremel tool works great. LMK how it goes or if you have any questions. If you have a tuner this would be a great time to do egr delete
 
no tuner, and i didnt feel like putting egr back on anyway lol. but i will keep you updated. im all for less kr

I like your approach Mike, although having done a ton of work and loving JB weld the way I do, I might wonder how thick it is in that area and how much might end up in the coolant area. Sounds like you did it right and got it good though.

Another couple of ways to do this is to plug the coolant tubes in the UIM with JB Weld, or drill and tap with 1/4" npt pipe plugs.

Well if you think of it when ur engine is at operating temp, and that coolant in going through ur tb it gets hot, not just warm, now it should just get warm to the touch.
 
Taking a look at how much coolant gets tot he TB vs the hot exhaust pipe under it.. or engine bay temps...it's tough for me to say that the coolant does much.
 
here is my perspective on the whole 'cooler' intake temperatures...

think about it for a second. think of how long the air sits next to where that coolant runs. it isnt going to make one lick of difference. however, the good thing about doing this is that throttle body gaskets now last FOREVER. other than that you won't see any gains.

i won't lie, it was done on my car too.
 
One reason I am doing it is because I don't trust that my block off plate will hold back coolant. After my top swap I put the Gen V North* adapter plate on and it was leaking coolant onto the crossover even with RTV on it. I guess I am afraid it will leak inside into the Blower and wreck the rotors or get blown into the engine itself. This way I never have to worry about the coolant leaking anymore. Yes I know I could use silicone or something else to seal it better but I want a permanent solution.
 


Pure...that's why many of us do it. :th_thumbsup-wink: Plus..then you can take the upper/SC off and never worry about draining coolant.
