How much KR is okay? - It's track time!

Ok, now that my car is all back together I'm planning on taking it to the track this Friday to see what kind of time I can get. I finally found a buddy (he was already my buddy, but I had no clue the punk had a scanner this whole time :th_jester:) with a scanner and he's going to scan my GTP for KR before I do anything. My question is what amount of KR is "okay?" I know that's relative so I'm open to all your thoughts/opinions. I want to have my own predetermined threshold and if it exceeds that threshold I won't race it until it's fixed. I read Reptiles' thread about KR and it was awesome, but I don't see that it addressed my question. The fact that stock, these have 3-6* of KR really surprised me. So maybe another way to look at the question is for all you with smaller pulleys, what amount of KR have you lived with, raced with, and been okay?

(My mods are in my sig BTW).

Thanks for the help as usual! :th_peaceout:

P.S. Taking my mods into consideration, what kind of 1/4 mi time would you guess I'd get? :th_winking:

Well...look at it this way...if you have anywhere in the realm of 3-6*...put some high ass unleaded octane in it when you get to the track...and make sure your gas tank is at about a 1/8-1/4 and put probably 2 gallons in it...it should kill it all. But ANY KR ISN'T good...no matter what people say...can you get away with some KR? Yes...but it isn't good for ya.

No, I don't have any clue what my KR levels are right now and I won't until I get to the track on Friday. I'm perfectly fine leaving the car in the parking lot and watching my friends race if I have KR. If I do have KR though, I'll probably cry.

Here's my next question. Why is 3-6* of KR okay on a stock set-up but not modded?

When you have a smaller pulley you are putting more heat and pressure into the combustion chamber, making it easier to blow up a piston.

A couple things...like I said...just plug the scanner in and make a pass...if you have beat on it street wise then one pass at the track PROBABLY won't kill it...just get into the scanner...that should be all you need anyways...if you get anything much more over 3* then I'd put some race gas in it...let it cool down...then go back at it...if it still knocks...then you might need a re-tune...but that is how the oldies did it in the 3800 scene...tiny ass pulley with LOTS of race gas...shoot...I remember seeing people run 3.2" or lower pulleys with PEM's, a ported blower, 160*, catback, DHP PCM, and al103's...the scene sure has changed to be a lot more conservative though...btw that link just goes to the main page.

K, thanks for the pointers bro. My buddy with the scanner said that if I get considerable knock he'll help me put in rockers and headers at some point. I've romped on it a few times on the street, but nothing super serious because I'm really uneasy having no clue what my knock is. Here's hoping I guess.

Well like I said just run the tank down pretty low before you go and toss a gallon in...it FOR SURE won't hurt anything...unless your totally not knocking...then its kinda overkill. Did you put the AL104's in though? Platinum plugs are a horrid choice for these cars...also if you still have your stock wheels...toss them back on...it'll really help out on the rotating assembly side of things...kill all that extra mass you have to move with the 18's...

thats right apache ftw

:th_laugh-lol2: You get the credit for that one.

How does having a low tank affect knock?

No, I haven't put in the 104's. I was going to see what my knock was first.

Put the stocker wheels/tires on just for weight reduction? I was kinda looking forward to racing with the Falkens cause they're softer (and of course wider) than my kuhmo's, but whatever works best is fine with me.

How does having a low tank affect knock?

it doesnt... hes just saying that for weight reasons... dont go to teh track on a full tank of gas... id do just blue says if they sell race gas at the track... try and go there with a near empty tank and throw in a gallon or two of 100+ octane

1) As long as there is at least a 1/4-ish in there it should be fine...its not a knock reducing thing...its a weight reducing thing...you know how much a full tank of gas weighs? It ain't light.

2) Wheels...you always want as light as possible is the goal...with the smaller wheel.

3)...and gawd...yes...104's.

theyre not bad... if ur modding a car, copper is better. platinums and iridiums are good for economy, long life, etc etc...

Well it isn't really the fact of modding...Cobalts boosted run awesome on NGK platinums...it depends on the model. DSM's love them too...from what I hear. Copper plugs are way colder and they help keep the heat down...thats the reason for them...they might not last as long and be older technology...but they work.
