How high should a L67 be able to rev up...

Stupid question! '97 GTP: In Park or Neutral you should be able to near redline the car without hitting the rev limiter correct? Mine will not rev up past 4K rpms and will not shift into higher gears without letting off the go pedal... Suspecting a clogged converter. Fresh tune up, no trouble codes. Spins up fine until just after 4k and seems to shift ok anywhere under 4k rpms.

Any help appreciated.

O YA i agree with matt5112 on that one...if ur moving and shift to neutral while ur rolling u can redline BUT!!!! make sure u stop completly before restarting because u will get a giant clunck because of the electronic trany

you have to give it gas so that the engine speed is above the speed it will be going when you put it back in gear. then you wont harm it when you put it back in gear.

Thank you, that answers that question (Park/Neutral). However, the car does not want to rev up higher than 4k in 1st or 2nd "manual position" while rolling. Boost gauge is reading high when on the gas but no responce at high rpms and no 2-3 or 3-4 shift without letting off the gas... I'm still suspecting a clogged cat. I would expect that the engine would still be able to rev freely in gear even if the trans was slipping. Converter feels significantly hotter than the resonator after driving and the engine temp really wants to climb when hard on the throttle, but comes right down to normal when driving with a light foot. Just got the car drivable so I do not have a lot to compare it to.

I suppose this should be in the transmission section. Car has 179k, stock exhaust.

If the cat is the issue...I'd get a 3" catted downpipe that is bolt-in from ZZperformance for real. Not only will it boost performance and get rid of any knock the car might have had...but it'll net better MPG's and last a ton longer for you...just a worthwhile investment to get get rid of the factory cat/downpipe/u-bend

That is what I was thinking, minus the cat + MIL eliminator/resistor. I have previously replaced a N/A 3.8 in a regal that ran into some similar problems a while back and just disconnected the exhaust temporarily before the downpipe to eliminate any converter restriction and it did care of the problem. The regal was 10x more obvious though... and I didn't live in town at the time.

I'll figure something out and report back. Thanks for the replies.

Cat is indeed very plugged up (removed it). I can't see any light through it at all and there is melted catalyst. For the time being I'm welding in a section of 2.5" pipe in between the first part of the factory downpipe and resonator.

EDIT: Took care of the problem. Revs and shifts like it should.
