How does the GTP stack up to cars nowadays?

The 97-03 and 04+, how do they stack to cars in their class nowadays? The GTP stock is a pretty quick car, modded it can be way fast for low money and funner to drive. My main question is can the GTP compete with these cars that my buddy had listed to me that he says can "smoke the GTP crap". Cars such as the new nissan altima, i doubt that thing can but i think the Maxima can. He says this new kia optima is faster too, dont know much about it but that it has turbo and it has 275HP so it can be faster. Other cars and trucks he says like the new Tundra, the Camary, the new mazda 6, a honda civic SI, the new Ram, Etc. HE lists a bunch of cars that i think are equal or maybe a slower, in a drag race that is. I dont think the mazda 6 Sport nor the camary or the altima or the KIA car can beat the GTP, can it? Over all the GTP is older so it wont have as much goodies in the cars as these new ones would. BUT can the GTP still compete with these cars stock or lightly modded? I know the GTP is not the best but im pretty sure it can compete with these cars and wont get smoked by these cars. I relly wanted to ask this cause a friend of mine is always saying he will get a new Mazda, Altima, or a Civc SI and will smoke a GTP all day just stock. Also ive looked around this site a lot, but can a GTP be modded with the right mods to a low 14sec to high 13 sec car with just 500$ of mods?

If you guys want to know what my buddy drives and says he can beat a GTP, he currently drives a Charger SXT. Slow POS that cant beat my Base GP and hes talking SH!T on a GTP.

yeah stock gtp stock for stock is slow.
500 dollars worth of mods can probably get you a 3.4 setup if you find a deal on headers and a tune.

I was thinking that it was now, you think it is still worth it getting a GTP? Was thinking about the 04+ style, what do you guys think?

Ya i like the 04+, and ya i could do most of the things myself but ill have to see what i can do there. So modded the GTP can still compete?

Ya i'd say. Some of those vehicles above are pretty heavy. You gotta factor power to weight in. I mean look at the Mini Cooper S it's roughly 185hp but its small and light. It's gonna have some get up.

Very true, the civc SI is also small with 191 HP i believe. SO is it worth still getting a GTP or any other 3800 S/C car to compete with some of these cars/trucks?

i would think so. a 3.8 is a platform with lots of aftermarket. depending on what you are looking for! if you want competition a 3.5 pulley on an 04+ grand prix with supporting mods will probably be enough to match even the SI's.

It's really simple... the HP to WEIGHT ratio thing has not really changed much unless you're going to spend big $ on how FAST that HP can be derived by a given engine over a set rpm range.

If you handicapped those (newerr) cars by putting weight IN them to match the GTP, then it would come down to things like traction, etc., otherwise I really don't see a big difference.

Bottom line is your GTP is at a disadvantage against a 3,000lb (or less) car with the same HP or even less sometimes.

welcome to the world of old cars. One day people will laugh and call you a fag because your car runs on gas.

I drove a 2010 Cooper S turbo with a 6 speed manual, that little bastard was like a go kart of steriodscold tires it took a 90* corner like a champ at about 45 mph. If you got a good driver in it that could launch it hard I think that it could be a fun race against my GXP, just going by feel, I have no idea the specs on the Mini.

Yep, the newer cars are getting lighter and can go faster cause of the lightness combined with lots of HP. Yet i think i will get a GP GTP and just see what i can do, other cars are very expensive to own and well with the aftermarket support of the 3800 i can get it to low 13 sec to high 12 cant i and still have it as a DD? I like the 3800 engine and the GP. I have looked around for Alt like SRt4, Evo, and the Cobalt SS is a really good one, BUT cant drive a stick. I wanted to get the GTO or Trans am/Camaro SS, Too much for insurance since im 18. Other cars are just very Expensive like the G8 GT or the Subarus. Bottom line i found GTPS to be very well in my price range and well really is it worth getting and modding to be a low 13sec car and still be a DD? I Also like the looks of the 04+ and i like the fact that its a V6 so its good for MPG sort of. So is it worth it and is true the aftermarket support is very great to make this big grocery getter a pretty quick car? Ive seen many people on this forum that has done it, and with not that much $$ used as compared to lot of other cars. Its easy for someone to say "oh put 700$ worth of mods into this GTP and your looking at a high 13 sec car" now can that be possible in reality?

Oh and also looking at the GP GXP but cant find any plus the thing that sucks is the differ tires front and back and the aftermarket support. Also people say with some light mods the GTP will walk all over the GXP, so isnt that pretty much beating a 14sec car?

Also thanks to all your guys answers

gtp with a 3.4 on a gen III or a 3.5 on a gen V SHOULD be able to run high 13's/low 14's with a tune and a good driver.
