How can you tell if a lifter is bad

i think the lifters may be bad in my 1998 grand prix can you physically see if a lifter is bad

Why do you think they may be bad? Usually "tapping" is the sound a lifter makes. In GP's this is usually because they are all bunged up from a failed LIM gasket.
