Home Subwoofer in my GP?

I'm not loaded with cash so i can't just go out and buy subwoofers for my car right now, but my dad has an old home stereo subwoofer sitting in my basement and didn't know if it was possible to hook it up to my car. I have a factory radio/deck with no amp. This possible?
 


lol i just took the speaker out of my friends bass amp to do that same thing. havent gotten around to wiring it up or anything but itll get done soon.

X2 on your question though. ive never hooked up a sub and dont really know how.
 
You would still need an amp to run the sub and most home audio is 8 ohm's where most car audio runs at 4 ohm's. You could probably make it work but I would say there would be little to no benefeit to it.
 
funny i found this... i have done this for a friend before. My question for you is before i tell you how to do this is what kind of sub is this? is it already in a box with a build in amp for like a home theater system or is just a sub without an amp. Depending on your answer will help me tell you how you can set this system up.
 
Most HT subs are 8ohm so you will get less power from your amps
They are designed for 2 different things so it will be hard to get it to sounds decent.
 


alright if the box has a power source such as like a power outlet plug then you can buy a power inverter and then run 8 AWG wire to the trunk of the car and ground the power inverter in your trunk and design a switch up front. Then you would buy a line out converter and use it to connect the home theater sub to your audio system in the back through both of your 6" x 9"s it all depends on what you have but normally you can make most home audio stuff work in a car.

That makes sence, I was wondering if he could use a power inverter if it was AC powered.
I guess so then.
 
You could try it and see how it sounds, I don't think your HU has enough power to drive the sub without an amp.
 


The home sub is designed to be given only lower frequencies per the home audio amp. If you just pull the signal from the 6x9's you will be feeding it the same frequencies. You now just have added a large speaker to your trunk.
 
yes iroccamarofan is right but the only thing is if you get a line out converter then, you will be able to set the sub to only receive the lower frequencies
 
Ok so now you still need to amplify the signal for the subwoofer. The output is not going to be enough to properly drive the woofer. You are still better off saving your pennies for a proper car audo amp and woofer and do it right the first time. You will have less problems, it will be done correctly, and sound much better!:th_thumb-up:

this is true but if you wanna be cheap you can use a home audio sub as long as it has an amp built into it, because most of them have an amp built into them.
 


sorry i did not read that the sub was not amped so then it would be pointless for you to buy a car audio amp i agree with Iroccamarofan just save up for a car audio system then
