Highway Cruising

I got a 98 GTP, now my tranny shifts smooth and quiet and I dont think there is any problems but I noticed at highway speeds if I let up on the gas the tach will drop to 900rpms or so and then when I step on the gas again it is almost like the tranny is slipping until it gets up to the RPMs the car was doing before I let up...

Is that normal???

for example...

Doing 80 Mph I'm taching out at about 3500 RPMs I let up on the gas and the tac drops to 900RPMs... after a few seconds my speed has decreased to 75MPH so I place my foot back on the gas and it takes a second for the tac to get to 3300ish RPMs before it feels like the tranny is engaged.

Its weird? but then again I'm used to driving stick for the last couple years.

Am I making any sense? If so is that normal?

Your "overdrive" is not working. 3500rpm is too much for 80mph.
I would suspct the clutches are slipping bad or not gripping at all.

Yeh your od is gone. I just had my trans replaced in my 06 for the 4th time doing almost exact same thing as yours except mine was 3rd gear. If i put my car in 3rd gear it would drop to idle untill I got enuf rpms for 2nd gear. For example 55mph 2nd gear at like 3500 rpms. If the car was put in 3rd rpms would drop to idle till I got back up to 3500 rpms for the car to be at the right rpms for the gear (2nd gear). They told me my final drive was out and my 3rd gear clutch was completely burnt up.

Is that repairable without costing an arm and leg? Or am I better of getting a used tranny? Shouldnt hurt to keep driving it that way until after christmas....

Cuz I'm screwed.. I got my daughters birthday in nov, my girls birthday is dec. 20th, and then christmas... money is gonna be tight the next couple of months. LOL.

Hey, with a name like MONEY, you shouldnt have a problem! Just Joking!

Misery loves company, my converter started slipping a couple of weeks ago, it's got the ol' bouncing tach going on when it try's to lockup. My car has 143,000 on it so I guess i'm going to just have to pull the tranny and go thru it all. Ive been out of work since 2-09 and already put a bunch of money into repairs since I got this car. Money is tight, and i have medical issues so working on cars hurts so much now, but I just cant aford to have it done (1600 buck) from a local shop. Getting the darn thing out is the hardest part, working on it on the bench is a sinch.

I haven't even hit 100,000 yet and my converter is screwed and my OD locks but the tach bounces. Its pretty much shot, I got a new trans for $400 thats built thanks to another member.

Well I looked into used trannys and I can get one for about $300. So after I make all my birthday/christmas purchases I will end up buying one and shoving it in by the end of the year.

Maybe I should get a shift kit before hand so I can install it with the tranny out of the car... just a thought.

Any suggestions on shift kits?
