Help with Rod Replacement... yes I searched.

First off... if I search Rod, it fails because the word is too short.
second, if I search connecting rod, or piston rod, the search only searches for Connecting, or Piston, and NOT rod.
So, I must start a new thread for something that has likely been answered a hundred million times, but please help me out.

I have a 01 Series II supercharged engine with a bad rod. I want to buy a new rod, but I see there is possibly two different types, one for Series II and another for Series III. Everyone sells the Series III rod, but I cant find anyone who sells a Series II.

For instance, ZZPerformance says their rod PN- 12593375 is for 04+

However, I go to GMPartsDirect, they have the same part number as above...and they say that part works for both Series II and Series III. I even had them double verify because I didn't believe it. Well, they said it would work, so I bought it. I have it in my hand now, but it does not look like what I have in my engine. This rod has two tangs in each half to locate the bearing. Of course, if you know what im talking about, then you will know my Series II Rods only have one tang per half, therefore the bearing set for a 01 rod will NOT work in this 12593375 part number rod.

so, can I use this rod anyways, if I get the proper bearing? I am thinking not because Bob Cox says they are shorter and lighter, therefore if I only replace one, then I will crash and be out of balance, correct?

Does that mean this part number will work, but I must replace all 6? I don't want to do that.

Really this comes down to... What is the correct GM Part Number for the rod I need? Where can I get one? I have been setting on this damn thing for 3 months now and its really getting old. Please help me out so I can get this moving again.

Thanks
Shawn

you didnt search nearly hard enough.

oh, take that engine and scrap it. buy a used junk yard engine and enjoy it. your cranks not round no more, it needs to be cut. all the shop time costs more then a jy engine. just not worth what it will cost. aka a full rebuild with machine shop work done. you cant just slap new bearings in these engines, they will blow up in less then 500 miles.

well, seeing as I paid 500.00 for a 01 Bonneville that's fully loaded, and I already purchased a crank kit... spending another 50 bux on a rod is still a good deal.

so, where can I get a rod?

you'll want the block align honed at least if you plan on doing this.

look, if you don't know the part number, just don't reply. You have no idea what I have going on, so stop whoring my thread. I just need a part number and/or a source.

IF you're that dead set on doing it....go to the wanted section and ask for an L67 rod.

Then we wait.

good luck, cant wait for the i rebuilt my engine and 200 miles later its knocking thread. good day sir.

maybe you missed the thread where I rebuilt my 4T65-HD transmission and got 25000 miles out of it before I sold the car for a profit... like I said, you don't know me or what I have going on, so quit acting like you do. you obviously don't know what the rod part number for your beloved engine is, so I don't know why you are talking out the side of your neck...

Instead of being defensive you could always explain "what you have going on" and it would avoid these comments and make people more willing to help you.

i got this thing called google. it works so well your head will spin. im not looking it up for you, you do your own leg work. you think we all know random part#'s off the top of our heads?

That is the rod number. In 05-06 GM superseded the part numbers for the rods from the series 2 engines to the series 3. They're not the same rod at all, the newer part number is powdered metal, the older number is forged. You cannot use the number that they provide now in that engine without buying all 6.

We've all been here and done that with these things. Pull out engines are easier and more reliable than trying to rehab one that's got a spun rod bearing.
It's nothing personal, sometimes it's just reality with these things.

Let me get this straight. You pitched a rod, you want to rebuild the engine and when told not to because its going to blow up after 500 miles because these engines hate rebuilds unless properly done by a machine shop that knows 3800s for thousands of dollars you freak out and tell the people trying to help you to go away... You also use the fact that you rebuilt a 4t65 (Not that impressive or hard) as a counter claim that the engine isnt going to blow up with a poorly done rebuild... WTF?

So, let me try and help:

Btw rebuilding a transmission and an engine are two completely different things. All the bearings in a transmission are already assembled. Engines will require machine shop work. All we can do is inform you, and you make the decisions. Obviously the 3800's bottom end is a completely new concept to you.

Yup, what everyone else has said. Listen especially to Reptile. The rods are about $50 each, you have to buy all 6, have the block align honed for your crank, rods will need to be sized properly, etc. This will easily turn into a $1500-ish job. You can pick up an engine for a few hundred with about 100k miles or so and be much better off. However, if you really want to spend the time and money, the new part # is 12593375.
