HELP Trouble Diagnosing iIntermittent banging noise in front center while driving

Hello,

I've had a thumping/rapping almost banging like noise going on in the front suspension for the past few months. It started off fairly quiet and intermittent; but its gotten louder and more frequent over time. Went in to my mechanic to get it fixed, but he told me the noise was coming from the transmission and it was the bearings going. I took it to a tranny shop and they can't figure out where the noise is coming from but do not think it is anything in the transmission/differential. The noise comes and goes while driving and there is really no pattern to it other than it is mainly noticeable over 30 mph and tends to get louder/more frequent the longer you drive. Turning the wheel one way or the other can make it better worse or have no effect depending on the day, it seems to be mystery. Does anybody have any idea what this God awful noise could be? Help appreciated thanks.

Does it ever happen while the brakes are applied? I think we'll need more information about when the noise occurs, over bumps, perfectly flat road, accel, decal, etc. Miles and maintenance done on the car would be helpful.

Jack up the car and wiggle the wheels at the 3/9 o'clock position and also the 6/12 position and feel for play. Look for anything hanging down or loose, rusted parts.

Yes happens regardless of whether brakes are applied or not. Noise occurs randomly while driving on any flat road or any other type of road, bumps do not matter, in fact bumps may shut it up. My tranny has been ruled out, so now I'm thinking possibly CV axles? 123k miles, all maintenance done, fluid flushes etc. I've maintained this car like an obsessed freak.. if that helps you. Little rust underneath, no rust on the body.
