Help sorting thru a problem or two

I'm driving a 2006 Grand Prix with 107K miles on it. Been suffering thru trying to figure out what is causing a P2431 code. I think it may be the Exhaust check valve on the secondary air induction and this is why I think that. This symptom has happened twice now and really got my attention the first time. When accelerating (high engine rpm roughly 4000 rpm or higher) the engine just dies!! Want to know if my thought process is sound on this. I believe what happens is this, when I get on the motor, because the check vale has failed (or open) there is a surge of exhaust gases being pushed through the air induction system and choking out the motor. Its that or the computer is reading wild sensor readings and shutting down the motor for safety reasons. Was wondering if anyone out there had some thought on this. Only seems to happen if I get on the throttle and rev the engine to a high RPM under load.

sounds like its not getting fuel. not sure if that code has anything to do with it.

it ever stall right after starting when cold? it could be fuel pressure regulator gone bad. or the pump is bad, or the filter is clogged up good. if you have one on that year, iirc they stopped the inline filter for a while. if you have one is under the car on the driver side in front of the back tire.

For anyone who may be remotely interested the problem turned out to be the Air Control Solenoid. Apparently the pressure sensor had failed and it looks as though the control valve may have been gummed up with exhaust soot. Car drives like a dream again.

That's pretty crazy that the solenoid would cause it to shut off like that. I've been having a very similar problem, and I recently disconnected the air pump and check valve wiring harnesses since I broke the outlet off the air pump.

If I plug those back in and the problem goes away, then you will be my savior :D

Holy hell, it worked. I just plugged both connectors back in, cleared the code, and brought the car on a WOT run in first gear to second... no issues whatsoever. I'm going to look into this a bit more, I'm genuinely curious as to why that was causing my car to shut off every time it hit between 4-5k RPM.

Thank you very much mdkoh for reporting back with your solution, you just helped me solve three weeks of headache :D

Glad you were able to get your problem resolved. The shut off problem I discovered quite by accident while jumping on the freeway. Had that happen twice, since I had the check engine light on I figured they were related. I'm thinking the ECM is seeing a dangerous situation when in the high RPM and as a precaution is shutting the motor off. Not sure what it could be but makes sense in the long run, especially when you are talking the RPM being up that high.

When I first posted this you can see I got a whole lot of feedback. I was rather disappointed too because it seems like on other issues in these forums you get a huge response back. I guess this was too much of a challenge to the tech types out there. Regardless I figure if I am able to help even one other person out there it's worth it. Glad I can be of assistance.
