Hi, i posted this same question last winter. I thought the problem was fixed but as soon as fall hit
the problem came back. I got my car last winter and it would go through periods of not starting and
stalling while driving at any speed or at red lights, sometimes it will start right back up but
sometimes it wont start for hours. Sometimes while driving the RPMs will suddenly drop to 0 and in
less than a fraction of a second they will jump back up, like it stalled and restarted itself!? It
doesn't seem to matter if the car engine is cold or warm, there doesn't seem to be any pattern. So
then it went all spring and summer with no stalling but the "get up n go" power seems to come and go.
The service engine soon light is on code p0440 evap emissions control system malfunction. The ABS and
TRAC OFF lights are on and there is an exhaust leak. So far I have replaced the: ignition control
module, all 3 coils, plugs, wires, alternator, battery, ignition fuse, pcv, gas cap, vacume lines
(top left of engine), lower intake manifold gaskets, bypass pulley, and just cleaned the cam sensor
and hardwired the fuel pump resistor sensor (it had a big peice of ceramic broken off the side).
I am hoping to replace the crank sensor the cam sensor and the fuel pump resistor by the end of
the week. Last night we found out that when it wont start it not getting power to the injectors
and no spark. Any suggestions (besides getting rid of it lol) would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank
you for any help!

Your description is a classic crank sensor. The hiccup is a precious thing isn't it? Some of the other signs that may never show up...but you might see are a code for starting in gear etc.

Since the crank sensor can be done with only a mirror and 10mm socket, if you'd like to save some money....I'd hold off on it.

99% chance this is the crank sensor only.

ok thank you! we are doing the crank today i think. my bf is a mechanic and he has it at the shop now. i think he said he was gonna drop the side of the engine and replace a pulley thats in the way and wont come off, to get to the crank sensor. also may be replacing the cam sensor and fuel pum resistor today if possible, as a just incase.

The balancer is in the way of the crank sensor. When he calls screaming about it, tell him the three bolts are M6 by 1.00 pitch and he'll need them to be about 75-85mm in length. (almost none of the typical puller kits have the right bolts.) In a pinch you can use 1/4" fine pitch bolts.

Torque on the two bolts for the sensor replacement is 13ft lbs.

Yes, definately my first time :th_biggrin2:

i had somewhat of the same problem, turned out to be a bad fuel pump and a bad wire (fuel pump feed)

our jack wasnt high enough to do it with the mirror we got it replaced yesterday morning though and so far so good !!!! keepin my fingers crossed

well i assume problem fixed, no stalling and starts up every time. it did feel like it wanted to stall yesterdey morning but thinking that is the maf will hopfully be replaced over the next couple weeks, about a foot of snow here!!!

Enjoy your snow..I saw a few flakes (first of the year) at this end of the world.

Glad to see you guys got this on before the snow.

I had the same issue when my car wouldn't start warm. BTW I'm in Buffalo right now and its pushing about 3-6 feet depending on where you are.

very happy to not be stalled and stuck out in the snow !!! btw holy cow 6 feet of snow!!! i saw they had the thruway closed in buffalo i just got back from ohio last weekend, just in time lol
