help for my moms malibu plz

so my mom has a 01 malibu.. with 3.1.... she has a clogged cat, a shop is telling her that there is 2 cat converters and tryin to tell her its 1200 bucks to fix... is there in fact 2 converters? or is he tryin to **** her? im only seeing one converter on rock auto for less than 200 bucks.

It should only be 1 cat, and a shop should be able to cut it out, and weld in a new generic one for about 200-300 total.

thats what i thought... thanks i told her if she paid 1200 for a CAT i would disown her... if she really wants to spend the 1200... give me the cash and ill get the CAT put in for her

maybe if the pieces from the cat broke out and went through the rest of the exaust, they could also be considered clogged or at least restricted ...i dunno, only 1 cat on the 01 malibu. didnt they have a recall on these converters taking a dump????

im not too sure .. i didnt actually drive it or look under car for this "2nd" converter... my uncle looked at it who is a fleet mechanic and got a new a cat for 150 and put it in for free... thanks for input guys.

$1200?? I would call that shops bluff on the over charged repair, and tell them if they don't fix the convertor for cost, I will report them to the local news broadcast for price gouging.
A good conveter can go from $50 to $150, and maybe an hour to install, that repair should not be more than $250 total jsut for a convert install, but they will try to tell you there is other stuff that is bad and needs to be repaird too.
This is why I have learned to fix my cars on my own.

ive told her to let me check out car probs first.... im not a mechanic but i do kno a good bit about cars and usually always work on my own car... hopefully now she lets me or my uncle check it out first... shops always try to rip off females.
