Sam from CA. Thanks to this forum and all the great info that the members have posted I am now the proud owner of an immaculate 97 GTP, all stock. I knew nothing about GPs but went to look at this car and loved the look and power. The engine had a rattle/knock that the owner said was the supercharger that needed to be replaced (said he priced sc at $400). Also had SES light on, throwing codes 102 & 171. I was not about to buy the car with possible engine problems and not being able to smog (CA smog regs. suck!). After extensive research in this forum I was confident that I would be able to fix the problems so I went back and offered $1500 and drove it home. A $25 sc coupler and $125 MAF sensor later she runs as good as she looks.
