Car was inspected a few days ago. Just came up with a code p0420 Catalyst system efficiency below threshold bank 1. So is this something to do with the catalytic converter? My dad didnt know about premium fuel having to go in the car so he put 1/4 tank in to get home. Could that have triggered this code?

Cat efficiency means that the pre cat O2 reading compared with the post cat o2 reading doesn't have enough of a difference. Therefore the pcm thinks your cat is bad.
 
if thats the case you can pick up a set of headers, or a new downpipe...free up some horsepower
