Harmonic, Balancer, Crankshaft, Sensor

Upon replacing my crankshaft position sensor (code came up), I realized the harmonic balancer was installed approximately 20 degrees off. Curious what problems would be expected with the balancer off 20 degrees?

2003 GTP
Engine is 1999 from Junkyard

It appears that the crank key itself made another slot in the balancer, it was ugly, trust me. The key was slammed deep into the crank. and there was a "new" slot in the balancer, like I said approximately 20degrees or so from the clear original. I am guessing they got it started (wrong) then used the huge crank bolt to reef it on?

I am not taking it back off to take an image of it, it was clearly smashed on incorrectly approximately 20* off from where it should have been.

Imagine leaving the key out, and shoving the balancer on 20* off.

There seem to be many changes in the way it runs now, curious what this could/would have effected?

Could the outer ring have slipped on the hub? I'm not real familiar with the 3800 balancer (yet. lol) but most have a rubber ring between the hub and outer ring and it could have slipped.

As far as the crank goes, has the motor ever been out of the car before you bought it?

The balance of the engine does seem to have improved, as it idles smoother now.
I am more curious about the effect of the crankshaft sensor and it telling the computer what position the crank is in being 20* off.
Also, under boost this engine always made a rattly noise, I always assumed it was a bad coupler in the SC but since the new Crank sensor and harmonic balancer adjustment, the noise is completely gone.

alkygto - I bought this engine from a junkyard, its a 1999 L67, car is 2003.

It would make it run like epic crap...had this issue once...put on a new balancer...problem solved. It throws the timing of the engine rotating assembly off 20*...which...isn't good. I know what your talking about man...sorry to hear in the beginning, but glad you got it fixed.

I've seen this a few times. Still wonder...how anyone can do this...really. To put a balancer on you push it forward and rotate it until it catches the keyway. Then you tighten the bolt to spec.

It seems to happen way to often to way too many people... please explain to me how this happened. My brain can't quite comprehend it.

BillBoost37 - I bought it from the junkyard that way. It ran pretty decent too, idled rough, cleared up when on the throttle.
Now it idles awesome in park, or when on the brake, but when you take your foot off the brake, seems to putput...(for lack of a better description) Have no idea why.
