Hard shift to reverse from park when cold

I only experience this problem on cold starts: I have to apply a considerable amount of pull to move the gear selector from park to reverse, feels like a lot of resistance. It also is usually accompanied by the engine/trans lurching quite a bit with a clunk/pop sound. I recently changed the mounts and double checked the nuts were tight, so I don't think that's an issue. Checked the trans fluid and its fine. Once the car has warmed up it shifts to reverse much more smoothly, and usually no clunk. Other than this issue the trans shifts perfectly fine in all gears, no check engine light is on, etc. Any ideas?

you park on a hill or any thing of incline?

stet the parking brake, then put the car in N for a second to let the brake hold the car, then into park. this way theres no weight pulling on the tranny.
