• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Gutted airbox (pics)

SaukRapids

I can't car too good.
A bit back, someone here had asked about gutting the airbox. I don't have a clip of the sound, unfortunately. If you're familiar with a cone, the box is quieter inside the cabin. Most the sound escapes the front. You can also keep using cheapo stock filters.

Here's some pictures to kinda give an idea of how it looks.

This is the silencer section cut out. I made sure to keep a lip around the edge to seal, even though I wasn't sure I had to. -

These were the cuts I couldn't reach with a Dremel. I finished with a drywall hole saw and didn't clean up the edges because ..why?

There it is if you've been thinking about doing the same. Not much to it, really. Enjoy.

I'll upload pics of mine when I get back, it's even more gutted than that.

I cut out ALOT to fit a 9 inch cone filter and 3 inch intake tube... lol

Noting from a technical standpoint: I’m certain there is no power gain (w/o more boost to use the extra air), even with the short ram that replaced this. My reasons for that is one, it’s been said for about as long as I’ve been alive that these engines breathe just fine. Secondly, I’ve owned an expensive intake and only noticed more response. An intercooler is more efficient, so it's worth saving the cost on a fancy intake.

Those sweet looking speed holes on the front are for letting sound out. It gets enough air without ‘em. My gf’s from TX where they have inspections. I did this thinking it would pass a quick visual.

This is a virtually free mod too. The cutting cost me three disks, only one of which exploded (too slow/tool too hot). I made those cuts by hand/eye. I cut up computer cases, so this was a breeze. Melted plastic flies everywhere using a Dremel. Be aware of the direction. I know there's a way to separate the PCM tray. I wanted to keep it whole.

War, I hadn't thought about putting a cone inside it. Interesting idea. The pic with my foot in it looks like that tube/bend might just pop out. There's more room for sure.

It does, but you have to really wrestle it out... I had a 10 in cone that would hit that tube piece, so I just cut it completely out.

Now, mine wont look the same as a stock one. It will show off the filter slightly, depending on how long it is, but the opening is basically right where the diagonal brace runs over the box, down to the base tray that holds the PCM. I was never going to sell this car lol
