GTP in a dress

Alright so i'll just get to the point i romped on my car today for the 9th 10th time since after my build last summer, anyways after i let off i heard the loud clucking sound, at first i thought it could be a valve and that isn't it then i worked my way down and i am led to believe that it is the flex plate and it appears to be wobbling, i want to inspect it more by being able to see the flex plat so my question is, is there anyway to get access to the flex plat bolt, and possibliy be able to remove the flex plate with out having to take the transmission all the way out?..i know it looks like there is about 2-3 inches between the end of the transmission and the body of the car, but wasn't sure that that is enough space ...

Re: GTP in distress

Have to pull the eninge to get at the flex plate, unless the torque converter bolts are loose you can get at those by removing the starter

Re: GTP in distress

i was afraid of that i might have to pull it back out, tomorrow i will check the torque converter bolts, although i dont think those are the problem =...but maybe ill get lucky and it will be

Re: GTP in distress

You can actually get to the TC bolts by removing the inspection cover. Use a wrench to check them and a screwdriver to hold the flywheel.

Re: GTP in distress

yea i sent Dave an e-mail last night and here is what he had to say about it

Hi Brian,

Glad to hear you are happy with the trans. The first thing I would inspect in the case of the noise you have would definately be the 3 torque converter bolts. If they werent tightened enough or locktite used on the threads they can back out and will give you a terrible rattle noise at idle and will go away when you put a load on the engine. Normally if the flexplate is bad or has a crack you will get a loud popping or pinging noise when you put a load on it. There is no way to access the flexplate without remove the transmission or engine, one of them has to come out to get to it. I have seen the actual flexplate to crank bolts be loose and cause the same noise but that was a very rare instance I wouldnt expect to see too often

so i am hoping that he is right that it is just the TC Bolts, but then on the other hand i have been reading a few things on here and people have been saying that it was a cracked flywheel producing the sounds so until i dig into it today i really will not know, ill be sure to keep everyone posted

Not the torque converter boots did find 2 small pieces of something in between the torque converter and the flex plate hard to explain what they look like but long story short looks like I am pulling the motor
