GTP exhaust 1 muffler vs 2 muffler?

I have a 1998 GTP with a custom Borla exhaust including two 2.5in mufflers. I am thinking about eliminating the y section in the rear and just running one muffler, basically like a regal setup. How would this affect the sound and performance? My hopes are it might make it deeper, smoother, and quieter. I would still leave the other muffler up there for looks.

Performance gain = none what so ever.

Sound, it might be quieter but thats hard to say.

I would just install a better resonator to slightly change the sound, as big long glasspack is a good resonator.
 
Get catted headers, get a big resonator like doofy said...and keep the mufflers.

It'll make the difference you want.
 
I already have a long 2.5in magnaflow resonator. Im thinking about doing this because the pipe to the drivers side muffler is hitting the swaybar and need attention anyway.
