ok my 96 GTP has had a starting problem for a while now and it's doesn't start up the first time mostly it does the second try.. if i prime the fuel pump a few times prior to starting it'll start right up.. a few people said its the fuel filter so i changed the one under the driver door and still hasn't changed any.. no it also seems like im getting less MPG but thats another story.. anyway am i looking at a new fuel pump orrr what? if i check the fuel pressure what should it be?

AZ:

Sounds like your fuel pressure is bleeding off after you park it for a while, which it should not do.

By "priming" it as you say, you are building the pressure back up and then it starts.

A simple way to verify is to hang a pressure gauge on the fuel rail, and let it sit for several hours turned off. Chances are you will find the pressure has gone down to nothing. You might want to take a reading with the engine running as well to see what PSI you have. This will give you a little insight as to the health of your fuel pump.

Could be the regulator, or the check valve leaking allowing the pressure to bleed off. Driving it this way won't really hurt anything, but it will just annoy you like it would me.

Minichop:

Check valve is normally inside the fuel tank. On some pumps, it is a separate part while on others it is integral to the pump.
Either way, if you decide to go into the tank it makes sense to replace the pump also while you are in there.
