Gravel / Sanding of roads

Well, I live in a part of Canada that does not usually get snow, so the road crews are completely clueless when it does snow. Instead of putting salt on the roads when they freeze, they put sand and gravel. Long story short, I had to drive to Victoria a few weeks ago for a doctors appointment (2.5 hours each way) and the roads were just sanded. When I returned I took my car straight through the car wash. when I got home I looked at my headlights and they still looked dirty. So I grabbed my cloth to wipe them off and fibers were getting stuck to the headlight. I ran my hand over it and it was completely chipped. I made a claim with my insurance company on my comprehensive coverage, my estimate $3800 (i only pay the 300 deductible). But they have to replace both headlights, fog lights, and repaint the hood, bumper, fenders, mirrors and roof. I'm waiting till winter is over before I take it in.

Holy crap! My parents live down a 1/4mile of gravel road and I have NEVER heard of ANYONE having damages like that due to gravel/sand....but atleast your getting it fixed.

I have heard of sanding the roads. They do it here in GA where I live when it freezes. They just do it in the low spots where puddles form. I've only seen it on the gound once though. Last year I beleive.

They sand the roads all the time here in Iowa. I can't believe you got so much damage from it tho, its weird I drove like 30 miles of gravel a week during the summer and have had really no damage from it. I keep the speed down to like 40 mph tho.

Causes a nice sand blasting affect when you get behind or pass someone in the opposite direction. Especailly for that period of time.

I live in colorado thats all they use is gravel.over the year u got lots of paint nicks and stuff but not in one day. wow. I have driven 120MPH down dirt road no problems

We don't even sand the roads down here in SC, but on some sections of road I can hear my car being pelted with it as a drive. I'm definitely getting a bra for my next car.
