Grand Prix GTP wont start

I Just replaced the motor in my 1998 Grand Prix GTP(which involved removing the motor) and now i have everything back together but when i went to start it it wont turn over. At the shop i was working at we replaced a 2.2L/2.4L motor in a Oldsmobile alero. afterward we had to do a certian sequence with the lights switch and some other things to reset the security system. do i need to do something like that here? any ideas?
 


98 might have a factory alarm but no type of pass lock to keep it from starting. I would start by checking out the grounds to the engine and see if youve got power at the starter.
 
well today we tried again and when we boosted the battery we found we had a short.(one wire started smoking). we fixed that and we fixed one ground but still the same issue. the starter wont engage. the security light on the dash goes off when i put the key in the ignition. i tried crossing over the positive on the starter with the starter solenoid and the motor cranked, but very slowly. i think it might be because the motor is cold. so now i have the block heater plugged in and a charger on the battery. but im not sure about the key not cranking over the motor.
