Got a tint ticket tonight

No this is not another thread where I whine and complain about a stupid cop. Actually the cop was quite cool minus the whole giving me a ticket thing. Just sucks about the ticket. Kinda ruined my night. I have to drive through a small town where all the roads are 30mph to get to work. Driven by multiple cops where they have never bothered me cause I do the speed limit but tonight at 12 (when it's pitch black) I get pulled over for my windows being dark. Wtf? So now I have to figure out if I get the tint removed and not pay a fine or pay the ticket and risk this same cop pulling me over repeatedly.

While that is the most logical solution I live in NY and legal tint looks dumb as **** and isn't worth paying for.

Pay the ticket and keep on trucking.

And/or roll the window down when your in that part of town.

I wouldn't worry about the same cop busting you again.

I had the same problem a good few years ago. When I was in high school I had a 1988 oldsmobile Cutlass Ceira custom with all the bells and whistles and the tint came with it straight from the factory. It was a gift from my aunt who bought it from the dealer and had to wait for it to be made, of all the years she had it and the time I had it never once pulled over for the tint then one day out of the blue I got a ticket for the tint being to dark even though it came from the factory that way so it as pay the ticket and risk it again or get it lighter. I ended up caving for going light tint.

It did not come from the factory tinted. The dealer had it done. The only vehcles that come with factory smoked glass are vans and SUV's. Even those are only rear windows and are tinted to legal specs in the states they are sold. I had to deal with it when replacing windows at the dealer and making sure we ordered the right code when replacing them.

OP - how dark is your tint now and what are the laws in your area?

ive been stopped 2 times, got a ticket once. if it happens again ill fight the ticket due to passing state inspection with the tint on my car.

a friend bought a used truck for work, he went for inspection and failed because commercially registered trucks cant have tint, so i think the law changed here for tint.

bout time NJ did something right.

Is your tint legal? Did they meter in during the traffic stop? If you fight it based on passing inspection and it is not legal, they will just go after the state inspector. If you have a state inspector who is cool, you are just going to get him burned.

theres no tint meters here. the law is the front windows are NOT to have any tint at all. (so not legal at all at the time of the install.) the back windows you could paint black if you wanted too.

so if cars are passing state inspection the law must have changed. the car in the next lane had 20% easy on the front windows, he passed too. i have 35 up front, to keep it lighter looking, 20% on the backs, and a 5% brow on the windshield.

the only 2 times ive been pulled over in this car were both for the tint.

I'm wondering, what % tint do you have? And I'm assuming it's all around the same?

My tint is 20% all around and when I was stopped before (been stopped I think 3-4 times now cause of it and this is my first ticket) it registered as 18% with their little thingy. Also legal tint in NY is 70% on side windows any % on rear.

I'm thinking right now that I'm leaving it on and paying the ticket. I've had it for 2 years and this is the first ticket I've gotten. If I get another ticket relatively quickly then I'll remove it.

this is NJ tint laws as i know them, but you wouldn't pass inspection if the law was not changed.

Tint Laws

Keep in mind, cities and counties can have different laws than the state law. Houston is that way. My inspector and several others have told me that if I meet the state standard, they will pass it. I know an HPD officer and he told me that as long as my tint meets the state law and isn't retardedly dark, they won't even pay attention. The only time I have been bother was by a state DPS trooper. When I asked him to meter it because I had instructed the shop to make it legal, he backed off and told me no big deal, but he "felt" it was too dark. Always ask them to meter it if you think you are within the limits. My buddy who is a cop pointed out that having your back windows really dark can make it look like your front windows are darker or might be what pushes them to write you a ticket instead of just pointing out that it looks a little dark.

I would be a bit skeptical of what that site says. Per the Texas DPS website, the rear windows have no limit on how dark, but the website you listed states they mush be 25%. I would check your states website directly to make sure you are getting good information. TxDPS - VI Window Tint Program
