General consensus on keeping steering wheel controls? Easy?/hard/worth the trouble?

I have an '02 grand prix gtp coupe with bose and onstar. i also have a pioneer deck w/remote that i want to install, however i'd like to keep everything as functional as possible, and having a bunch of dead buttons on my steering wheel doesn't seem too appealing.

What do i need to make my deck work? i'm assuming some sort of adapter is required to work with the bose, and a second adaptor to use the factory wheel buttons with my new deck. What is recommended? what works, what doesn't? thanks
 


There are a couple routes you can go. There's a universal adapter which kinda sucks because you have to mount the IR sensor in view of your radios IR sensor. You can use this with any radio that has a remote IR sensor in it. (I.E. it came with a remote or has the option for one)

Or you can go with a radio specific adapter that doesnt need the IR sensor. You can only use this if your radio has a steering wheel interface jack on the back of the radio.

It will still need to be programmed which can be a pain in the ass your first time. If you mess up you have to start all over. But after a few tries, you'll have that shít down. Just follow the instructions included.
 
You can use the normal aftermarket stereo kits from METRA or similar for the brackets and the wiring

For the steering wheel interface you'll need a PAC Audio SWI-PS or an AXXESS ASWC. Same installation for both, and both can have the buttons custom mapped, but the AXXESS already has a good configuration built in and it auto-detects.

For audio you can go one of two routes.
1. Wire from the speaker output of the HU as you would with a normal non-amplified system. This is not the best solution as you would never want to turn the volume past around 1/2 unless you feel like frying the amplifier.

2. Wire the line-out from the HU (if it's 4+ channel line-out) to the same wire as mentioned before. This is better because the BOSE amplifier relies on low-level input from the factory head unit.

IIRC for On-Star, you need a GMOS adapter, but having never messed with a GP with On-Star I'm not 100% sure.

You need a Metra 70-1858 wiring adapter and an Axxes ASWC module for the wheel controls.....

The Axxes module took about a minute to self program, and the wheel controls work as they did with the stock radio. My JVC remote has yet to come out of the center console. :)
 
What model headunit is that pioneer? That will let you know what steering wheel adapter (PAC vs Axxess).

Ant way u can help me out with this. Got my head unit in but was a bit intimidated by the metra adaptor.
