Gas Leak - under fender by fill tube

It appears I have a gas leak and after looking under the car I spotted what appears to be gas on the filler tube, the rubber hose portion, and the hard-line tube that runs down right next to the filler tube, which is coming from ??? Actually that is my question - 2001 Grand Prix, up under the fender by the gas fill tube is a small hard line, similar to a brake line, that comes out of some canister type devise which is a little bigger that the gas filter itself. This can't be the gas pump as that is inside the gas tank I believe.

Curious what it might cost to have a mechanic (dealing with gas) replace this stuff, I'm guessing that hard line will need to be replaced, probably rusted out, not even sure where it leads.
 


I don't know exactly what you mean by the gas fill tube unless you mean literally where you pour the gas in. But it could likely be the fuel line which happened to my car. Crouch down on the ground next to your car while it's running on the driver's side near the rear wheel. If you feel up there you should feel the hard line going to the fuel filter and on the other side of that a soft nylon line. Either side could be leaking. You can buy repair kits fairly cheap for either side from AutoZone.
 
That is the evap canister and related hoses. Typically the only way you'd get fuel out of that is if you overfill the tank

That's interesting because I had just filled up my tank a few day's prior, parked it in the garage and haven't use it over the holiday weekend. I fill it up and until it gas nozzel automatically cuts off, never sqeeze in extra as I track my mileage.

So yes, I crawled under the car and looked up under the fender and and this is where I spotted the fill tube (where you stick the gas nozzel and load up on gas) and this larger 1" or 1-1/4" steal tube connects to a nylon or rubber hose that goes to the gas tank. Right next to his is a steal breakline-size line that runs up to a canister that device. Both seemed to be damp and ripe with gas but then again it's hard to tell which is leaking or had gas on them.

I did drive my car yesterday but only for around 8 miles, so just about a 1/3 of gallon of gas used. Not much but strange that the garage was filled with gas fumes this morning. So why do they need a hard steel gas line going up to the evap canister, as if it under pressure, because it's the same type of line that runs up to the engine. Is there gas going into the evap canister?
 
yes contents are under some pressure. maybe next time you fill it up watch the lines to see where its leaking from.and for the love of pete, stop parking it indoors in a closed garage if your smelling fumes. good way to burn the house down, or die..........
 
Great, now I'm confused. Should I wait and monitor to take it into the shop tonight? If I take it in there's a good chance they'll tell me my flux-capacitor relay is bad - $750 but a special today for $700. Good point about parking it in the garage but: A) I though it was a loose lid on the lawn mower gas jug at first B) when I get home tonight after using up a gallon of gas, and if I decide to monitor it, going to be hard to tell if it's leaking when the car is outside in the wind.
 


gas will dry fast, it will also leave a dried stain. so with a good light you should be able to find and follow a trail to the source. filler necks rust out, lines rust out, canisters crack or start to hold gas inside, little rubber vent hoses can break or come off. you just need to take the back wheel off remove the plastic liner and take a good look at it all.

easy way is to fill it either with a gas can or at the pumps and watch for a leak. especially if your seeing drops on the ground.
 
Thanks everyone. So far no drops on the ground, just dampenss on the lines back there but at least I have a good idea of what to do and how to proceed.
 
and keep it outs side, i know it sucks but its not alone outside in the dark. its where mine gets parked full time. wish i had a garage.
 
Quick update -last night 13 miles home from work, then another 10 to/from baseball, and todayI do not smell gas. So something is going on when the tank is full which I'lllook into but the good news, it buys me a little time as I'm not rushed to takeit in and find out my flux capacitor is arcing and requires and engine rebuild.

The lines that go to the EVAP canister are not metal, they are plastic. The second smaller tube goes to top of filler acts as a vent line so you can fill tank without creating an airlock. I recently replaced my leaky metal tank with a plastic one (easy upgrade). I took out my filler tube and when I cleaned it up it looked like swiss cheese- much like my tank. I bought a new Spectra filler neck for $100
