Hey guys and gals

So yesterday I was driving the car and the check gas cap light came on. So I did, and i couldn't get the light to go off. Today when getting some other work done on the car i told them, and they got rid of the light, and so far so good.

I never had the light come on before but last time i filled up, I filled it right up. The garage said that these cars and some other cars, when you fill it up too much, the gas can get in the gas cap and damage the charcoal filter in the gas cap causing it to not do its job.. Makes sense.

So if my light comes back on, i'll assume thats the what caused it to fail, so i'm sharing what I was told to hopefully avoid it down the road.

WHen it the gas pump shuts off, consider it full!
 


I disagree with this... You should have a check valve in the fuel neck on your 04. Also as far as I know there's no charcoal in gas caps since the 80s. That's what we have evap systems for.
 


Also there was a report that said topping of your gas can give you cancer. I guess because the fumes can escape and eventually cause cancer.
 
Topping the tank off can fill up the charcoal canister and ruin it, does not happen very often but it does happen.
 
Bought my GT new in 1997 been topping it off everytime I fill it 300,000 iles and have not had this issue. and I agree with Spade there is no charcol in the cap I would be looking for a ne mechanic
 


I've done that before. Figure in gas, chips, a 1lt, and tax and get it square on $50.00.

Overfilling the tank wouldn't cause the gas cap to leak lol. The evap system on these cars often sets off the ses light on our older cars. Mine will have the "small evap leak" code for forever now, not a big deal at all. It detects a leak as small as .04" inches.
 
IDK about you guys, but when I'm "filling up" after it clicks, I can put another 4 gallons in until it's topped off.
 
I was told not to overfill because of that issue in school too and saw a couple related problems when i worked in a shop. Doesnt always and wont always cause a problem but i agree it for sure can.
