Function of the three metal tubes on the inside, bottom of the transmission?

I changed the transmission fluid on my 97 Grand Prix GT today and once I dropped the pan, I noticed the small metal tube (indicated by red) was actually not seated inside the metal tube housing on the transmission (indicated by blue). I'm just wondering what exactly the function of the tube is. Obviously it has tranny fluid flowing through it, but I'd like to learn a bit more about its purpose. The other end leads to a rubber tube, and that's as far as I got.
