Fuel sending unit on a 2001 grand prix.

I would like some info on how to replace the unit. My gauge does not give me a true reading of how much gas I have. It is very annoying not knowing how much gas I have in the tank. I have learned alot from this forum. I hope someone can give me some instructions on how to do it. Thanks in advance.

Youtube "bonneville fuel level sensor replacement".

Its a 3 part video on how its done, you will pretty much be doing the exact same thing on your GP as he does on his bonneville.

That part is only like 20-30 bucks.

I have a gallery of pics from when I did my fuel pump upgrade / level sensor change..... Basic idea is remove the access cover under the carpet in the trunk. Pop the three lines off.... should come off by hand without tools. Remove the two electrical plugs. Then theres a big metal ring that you use a hammer to beat / turn left to unlatch it. remove the ring and then the entire sender lifts out. I suggest doing it with the tank mostly empty. Then its as simple as unclip the old sensor and clip in the new one.

I suggest not using a worklight or anything electrical near the fuel hole for obvious reasons.

Can you just replace the whole sending unit ? Instead of tapping out the moving piece. Do you have to splice in the wires if you replace the whole unit.
Polarity doesn't matter right ?

if you change the whole gas pump and sending unit, its the whole thing that comes out of the tank. a new one will plug right in.

Just wanted to pop the sending unit off and pop a new one on. Or is it easier to tap the finger piece off and tap the new on on.

I'm not sure.

I replaced mine before dorman came out with a replacement, theirs might be a straight plug and play.

Otherwise the way in the video works great.

Just get the doorman one. Litterally is plug and play for 30$. Its what I did and it works wonderful.

Replaced my brothers fuel sending unit on his 03 with the dorman part. Just FYI the rubber seal that comes in the dorman kit doesn't fit to well. Well in my case it didn't. I ended up reusing the stock rubber seal.

Once you have the whole assembly out of the tank you basicaly do this

1. unplug fuel pump
2. unplug main 4 wire plug at top of assembly
3. unclip old level sender from assembly
4. reverse instructions to complete

Should be a 4 to 5 min job once the canister is out. Unless your trying to put the wrong pump in the wrong canister the wrong way like I did :P
