fuel pump shutoff?

In the interest of having plenty of gas on hand for emergencies(without storing many 5gal. cans @ home), Will the fuel pump on a stock 2006 GP base shut itself off if it senses a lack of return? I recently discovered how easy it is to remove the fuel line @ the rail, and seeing how long and flexible the line is(it easily reaches over the drivers side fender-to facilitate filling a gas can for a portable generator), I disconnected it, put the line into a gas can, and turned the key on just to see if it would work. It did, but I turned the key off after 30 seconds. I was just wondering if anyone knows how long it would run for? I know different cars/manufacturers have different safety features, so I thought this car might sense no return pressure and "think" accident with ruptured fuel line and shut the pump down. Back in the day I had a ford escort (BLECH) that would randomly shut off, and it turned out to be a loose sensor in the rear quarter that was meant to sense an accident and cut fuel flow. Retightening fixed it. In GP's the fuel pump runs constantly, right? Whatever doesn't get used just returns to the tank, right?

So 1.) Does it kill itself?

2.) If it does happen to trip, where's the reset?

Just looking forward(or not) to be prepared for hurricane, blizzard, ice storm, zombie apocalypse, or whatever.........

Thanks in advance all, E.........

Key on engine off, the pump only runs for 2 seconds.

This is how all GM cars have been since the 90's. Without the engine running it's not going to command anymore from the pump, all it will do is prime the fuel system.

car off and key to run the pump only runs for a few seconds, you likely were really syphoning the gas after the pump primed.

if the car was running and the line blew theres nothing to stop the pump from pissing gas all over the place.

CRAP! The flow was somewhat small, (couldn't really see because I had the end inside a metal gas can)but it looked like enough to do 5gal in like 10 mins, but I see now, NOT. So I'd have to figure out some kind of tee-off setup to have the engine running while drawing fuel to gas can? I Know siphoning from newish cars can be difficult too, and I really didn't want to break into the fuel line under the car, I was looking for something easy to do when it's like below freezing outside and no power at home.

what you do is pop the line off the fuel rail and then use a jumper in the fuel pump relay.

if you had a old fuel rail you could cut off the tube with the quick connect on it and run a hose off the tube, plug that into the fuel line to fill your can up.

Just figure out a way to jump the pump, supply it with 12v and it'll keep running.

Don't over think this.

Thanks, FFDP. It was your words of wisdom that got me to focus on that method. Trying to harvest gas from a hot/running motor does seem foolish/dangerous now. I replied solution to Dacton1985 's thread "gas tank" in '04+.
