fuel leak

My fuel pump took a dump on me end of last week. i got a bit of help changing the pump out, and we couldnt get the new O-ring to fit and let us get the snap ring in place. so, without much other choice, we re-used the old O-ring. went right in. problem showed up today when i filled the gas tank. Filled the tank and noticed fuel leaking to the ground from under the car! i climbed in the trunk and removed the access panel, and sure enough, the pump assembly was wet with fuel. We didnt need to use any lubrication or anything on the old o-ring, but i am guessing that it isnt a tight enough fit to seal the gap??

are there any tricks you can offer that will help me get the new o-ring in place?

obviously silicone grease or similar... can i use something to push down on the pump assembly? maybe pry bar against the body and the pump?

Might try some grease on the o-ring.

Oddly enough, when my FP went out at work. I had someone pick me up a new FP assembly and I couldn't get it in there because of the new o-ring too. I did the same thing you did, reused the old o-ring and it pushed in with some effort and placed the snap ring in place. It ran and i've never noticed any problems (that was 3 years ago). I guess I got lucky. I donno if I used grease or not, I kinda doubt it since it was in works' parking lot with my toolbox only (thank god I carry a tool box in every vehicle I own!). If I was at home, I would of figured out how to make the new o-ring work. But with limited resources and 8:00 pm in the evening, I was just looking forward to getting the car going, going home, taking a shower, and going to bed to be back at work at 5am!

Yank her out, O-ring probably ripped when it was forced in, thats my only guess...

it actually went in pretty easily with the old o-ring, i suppose its possible that the aftermarket pump assembly was molded slightly different, and the new o-ring accomodates this differennce.

I have reused the old original o-ring as well a few times on my car. I have always gotten away with putting it in dry.

But if you think putting some lube on it will help (new or used o-ring) I would use some silicone type lube.
